In a large area of Rio Grande do Sul, especially in the westernmost regions, the predominance of a period with low rainfall in recent days led to significant progress in soybean sowing, partially compensating for the previous delay. According to the Economic Information released today (7/12) by Emater/RS, the sown area index in Rio Grande do Sul reached 76%.
In the Middle Plateau, the proportion already exceeds 90%, and plant emergence shows substantial improvements compared to areas planted in early November. The plants emerge with greater vigor, the unifoliate leaves are well developed and the stems are more robust. Furthermore, it is possible to observe a more intensely green leaf color in the visual appearance of the crops.
The percentage of corn area planted totals 87% of the projected amount. The predominance of sunshine in most regions of RS was also beneficial for corn crops, covering all stages of development. There was a noticeable improvement in the visual appearance of the crops and the leaves are more dry, thus reducing the likelihood of the spread of foliar diseases.
However, in the Northwest, the damage already recorded in corn crops still affects crops and could harm the maintenance of initial production potential. In the Middle Plateau, specific deficiencies in crop pollination are manifested by failures in ears of considerable size and are mainly concentrated at the tip of the ear.
Rice sowing also advanced due to improved weather conditions. The greater number of dry days was crucial for rice farmers, who faced delays in planting crops, as well as in replanting in areas affected by recent floods.
The pending cultural tasks in several rice crops were also resumed, with the application of herbicides and nitrogen fertilizers, in addition to the start of irrigation in areas where the plants are at the four to six leaf stage. The increase in temperatures and the sequence of sunny days also played a significant role in the development of already established crops.
