Peanut production in Brazil has shown robust growth, with a projected increase of 46,6% for the 2024/25 harvest, reaching approximately 1,07 million tons, according to estimates from the National Supply Company (Conab). This growth is driven by technological advances, such as genetic improvement of seeds and mechanization of crops.
Brazil is one of the main exporters of peanuts, with around 80% of its production destined for the foreign market. In 2024, the country exported more than 400 thousand tons of the product, with the main destinations being the European Union, Russia and Algeria, which demonstrates the competitiveness of Brazilian peanuts in the global market.
Domestic consumption of peanuts is on the rise, with derived products such as oil and snacks gaining popularity among Brazilian consumers. Approximately 20% of production is consumed domestically. Peanuts have become a popular choice among Brazilians, with 45% of consumers opting for them over other nuts.
Despite current growth, Brazil still supplies only 8% of the global peanut market, which is estimated at approximately US$90 billion annually, which indicates great potential for expansion – the country stands out as the sixth largest peanut exporter in the world.
“The lack of rain has been a significant problem for peanut crops in the country, affecting the start of planting and productivity in most producing regions. In 2024, the drought delayed planting by about 10 to 15 days, leading producers to wait for better weather conditions before sowing the crop. At the same time, high temperatures, combined with the lack of rain, have hampered crop development. The balance between rain and sun is crucial for the healthy growth of the crop”, recalls Aijânio Silva, Market Development Consultant at ICL, which, as with sugarcane, soybeans, citrus and corn, has focused on the crop in São Paulo, with a planted area of over 172 thousand hectares in the 23/24 harvest.
With this scenario in mind, ICL has increasingly offered innovative solutions for almost all stages of peanut cultivation, helping to overcome the challenges of the crop. On January 15 and 16, ICL was present at the 3rd Peanut Class Field Day, which took place at Fazenda Santa Helena, in Getulina (SP), where it had the opportunity to present technologies for the crop to participants, which include soil fertilizers with improved efficiency and special foliar fertilizers with high solubility; with exclusive chelates on the market, with a beneficial element for biofortification.
“On that occasion, we demonstrated ICL technologies for balanced nutrition with soil fertilizers with improved efficiency (Phusion and Polyblen) and foliar fertilizers aimed at physiological action, enzyme activation, stress mitigation, biofortification and application technology in order to increase peanut production levels”, concludes the company's Market Development consultant.
