The Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), the Meridional Foundation and other partners are promoting 13 field days on wheat cultivation in Paraná, in the 2018 harvest. The events will be held from July to October, in the different producing regions of the state that leads wheat production in the country. The field days will focus on wheat cultivars developed for the region, in addition to phytotechnical management, among other topics of interest to each region.

Paraná is expected to begin harvesting approximately 1 million hectares in the coming weeks. According to the Department of Rural Economy (Deral) of the Secretariat of Agriculture of Paraná, the estimated harvest is 3,3 million tons, which represents 50% more than the previous harvest (2,3 million tons), which was damaged by the weather. Featured cultivars - According to researcher Manoel Bassoi, the BRS Sanhaço cultivar is a medium-cycle wheat with physiological maturity of approximately 112 days and with high productive potential. “This wheat has good tillering capacity in colder regions, presenting good health in relation to leaf spots, rust and Fusarium head blight, as well as being resistant to natural threshing”, explains Bassoi. The cultivar presented an average productivity in the trials of 6.817 kg/ha in the wheat growing region 1 of Santa Catarina.

BRS Atobá is another highlight being presented. The cultivar will be launched in 2019. The cultivar is of the bread/improver class, therefore, it has good quality for use in baking and its flour can also be used in mixtures with flours with lower gluten strength. The cultivar is being recommended for all regions of Paraná and Region 3 of Mato Grosso do Sul. Just to get an idea of the productive potential of this launch, according to Bassoi, on average over two years, the grain yield was 5.007 kg ha -1, in Region 1. In Region 2, the yield was 4.839 kg ha-1. The grain yield in Region 3 of Paraná was 3.840 kg ha-1 and in Region 3 of Mato Grosso do Sul, the average grain yield was 3.218 kg ha-1. According to Bassoi, the cultivar has an early cycle, much desired by farmers. It is resistant to lodging and has a good tolerance to pre-harvest germination. Regarding health, the cultivar presents resistance to powdery mildew, good resistance to leaf rust and moderate resistance to leaf spots and Fusarium head blight.
