Pará Green Grain Protocol reaches 100 signatories

The Pará Green Grain Protocol has surpassed 100 signatories, consolidating its position as one of the leading initiatives to ensure responsible grain production in the state. The agreement combines guidelines that balance sustainability, environmental preservation, and compliance with Brazilian legislation. 

According to the latest audit, with the addition of new signatories, approximately 3,2 million tons of soybeans, around 96% of the state's production, are in compliance with the strict socio-environmental requirements demanded by the Pará Green Grain Protocol. 

"Exceeding the 100 signatory mark is very significant; it demonstrates the strength of this important initiative, which encompasses companies and public authorities to enable sustainable expansion, guarantee market access, and provide legal certainty to the grain production chain," says Bernardo Pires, Director of Sustainability at the Brazilian Association of Vegetable Oil Industries (Abiove). 

The Protocol was developed by the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office in Pará as part of efforts to reduce deforestation rates in the region and ensure the preservation of the Amazon. In addition to Abiove, the Attorney General's Office, the Pará State Government, rural producer unions and associations, cooperatives, cereal producers, the National Association of Cereal Exporters (Anec), and Unigrãos also participate. 

Signed in 2014, the Protocol establishes that production must be free of illegal deforestation, have a regularized Rural Environmental Registry (CAR), be free of embargoes, and respect indigenous lands and conservation units. The guidelines also contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with agricultural activities. 

Another pillar of the initiative is the encouragement of good labor practices, with the requirement to combat child and slave labor, in addition to the promotion of occupational health and safety in the field. 

"This leading role played by Pará, a strategic state for maintaining the Amazon biome and host of COP 30, highlights the Green Grain Protocol as an example for other states to follow," adds Pires. 

Agricultural companies and cooperatives involved in grain marketing and financing in Pará must follow the criteria established by the Green Protocol.
