How can artificial intelligence (AI) impact the post-harvest of fruits and vegetables and contribute to reducing food losses and waste? This is the central question that motivated Embrapa Instrumentação to organize a panel with experts, on November 23rd, starting at 8 am, in São Carlos (SP).

The concepts and paths of artificial intelligence will be presented by professors Ricardo Marcondes Marcacini and Solange de Oliveira Rezende, from the Institute of Mathematical and Computing Sciences at USP. The potential of AI in agriculture and post-harvest will be the topic of researcher Jayme Garcia Arnal Barbedo, from Embrapa Digital Agriculture (Campinas – SP).

Success stories

Aimed mainly at university students, extensionists, researchers, rural producers, agricultural technicians and people who work on the subject, the panel will also present two success stories on the use of artificial intelligence in the post-harvest of fruits and vegetables, with the mediation of Professor Alexandre Delbem, from ICMC-USP.

Researcher Fabricio Lira Figueiredo, from CPQD, will address the results and developments of digitalization in São Miguel Arcanjo (SP), with the SemeAr project - an initiative that aims to develop a digital innovation platform for agribusiness, with solutions aimed at demands of small and medium-sized rural producers.

Aravita's co-founder and CPO (Chief Product Officer), Aline Azevedo, will detail how the Brazilian startup - founded in 2022 - has used artificial intelligence to manage fresh food and reduce losses in supermarkets, one of the industry's biggest challenges and of food retail.

Registration and vacancies

With limited places, the panel has free registration via the link https://forms.gle/J4ZMvqx6umGSPe849 and will provide a certificate of participation for anyone in the Embrapa Instrumentação auditorium. The event – scheduled to end at 12 noon – will be broadcast live on Embrapa's YouTube channel.

“The Post-harvest Technology in Fruits and Vegetables Course, created in 2011 and now in its 8th edition, has always sought to bring new things, this year we have already carried out four face-to-face actions in the Sorocaba region to provide information and technologies”, comments the researcher from Embrapa Instrumentação, Marcos David Ferreira.

“The panel is another initiative on a topic at the frontier of knowledge – Artificial Intelligence – which has already impacted the post-harvest of fruits and vegetables and will still cause many changes in the fruit and vegetable chain. Next year, we will finish this edition with a new virtual module of the course that will address the use of water”, concludes the coordinator.
