Chief Engineers Panel of the SAE BRASIL Congress will address the role of ethanol in the powertrains of the future

The electrification of the energy matrix has been one of the most challenging issues amid the major transformations in the automotive industry. In this context, ethanol plays an increasing role in the Brazilian scenario, in terms of its use in hybrid vehicles and also in relation to the prospect of its adoption as an energy source for fuel cell cars.

This panorama motivated the organization of the 27th SAE BRASIL International Congress and Exhibition on Mobility Technology 2018, which will take place from the 3rd to the 5th of September at the São Paulo Expo, in São Paulo (SP), to promote the debate on this topic in the Chief Engineers Panel , focusing on addressing the role of ethanol in the development of the so-called powertrains of the future. “It is a topic that needs to be discussed with great responsibility and that represents the opportunity for Brazilian engineering to have a differentiated position with regard to vehicle electrification”, emphasizes the chairperson of the Special Events Committee of the SAE BRASIL 2018 Congress, Ricardo Bacellar, from KPMG.

Even though the option for hybrids is increasingly in evidence, the chairman highlights that recent research shows that 78% of automotive industry executives see the fuel cell as the best path among propulsion technology alternatives. These same studies also indicate that, between 2030 and 2040, the market will be divided equally between combustion engines, batteries, hybrids and fuel cells. Precisely because of this perspective, Bacellar sees as fundamental the discussion of issues involving the potential of flex hybrids and fuel cells with ethanol in the national market, the capacity of Brazilian engineering to enable this advancement before other countries and also project Brazil as possible exporter of these technological solutions.

For this debate, the Chief Engineers Panel of the SAE BRASIL 2018 Congress will have highly relevant guests, such as professor Dr. Daniel Zanetti de Fiorio, from the Federal University of ABC, the product engineering manager at Nissan do Brasil, Ricardo Abe and the director of research and development at Magneti Marelli Powertrain and Electronic Systems, Gino Montanari. “With this mix of highly relevant names, with representatives from an automaker, a supplier and a researcher, we will be able to offer a very comprehensive overview to the participants”, argues Bacellar. The panel's mediator will be the director of planning and engineering at HPE Automotores do Brasil Ltda., Reinaldo Muratori.

The Chief Engineers Panel will have its activities on the second day of the SAE BRASIL 2018 Congress, scheduled for September 4th, at 16pm.
