There is no news of food shortages, says minister
According to Tereza Cristina, Mapa is also concerned about small producers and guiding associations and companies to ensure safety for workers in the sector
The mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, where the city of Teresópolis is located, continues to be the largest producer of vegetables in the state and the main supplier of Ceasa, in Greater Rio. It is there that José Lino, one of the largest nurserymen and producers in the area , has been cultivating Samira lettuce, a variety recently launched by Topseed Premium.
For the specialist in brassicas and hardwoods at Agristar do Brasil, Silvio Nakagawa, the variety provides producers with excellent performance in the summer, with a good level of tolerance to fusarium, Tipburn and early bolting, in addition to characteristics such as a large plant, with good quantity of leaves, thick stem and rusticity.
Due to these and other attributes, Samira lettuce is a differentiated product for the curly market, which was presented during Hortitec 2019, one of the largest fairs in Latin America in the horticulture segment, and shown in the field and in the greenhouse on Field Day company's Open Field Day.
Since then, producers and nurserymen, such as José Lino, have incorporated Samira into their weekly sowing planning, maintaining constant growth in sales of the material. In 2020, Samira is already achieving a prominent position in several cultivation centers in Brazil.
The technical Sales consultant, Jonatas Fonseca, who serves José Lino together with the reseller Companhia do Produtor, has followed this evolution since the beginning, in 2018 when the farmer received some seeds as a sample.
“Before I start producing on a large scale and recommending it to my clients, I always carry out tests to understand the material and the necessary handling. Since we started with Samira we haven't had any complaints, everyone has kept asking. The return is that it has a lot of quality, has reduced the incidence of soil diseases and dies less”. He also adds that before Samira it was very bad to harvest lettuce, due to the fusarium attack. “Today the field is uniform and free from the disease, because it is very resistant”, highlights José Lino.
