New Biotrigo cultivars are indicated at a Wheat Research Meeting

The final plenary of the 14th Meeting of the Brazilian Wheat and Triticale Research Commission (RCBPTT) took place last Thursday (29/07), with the approval of three new wheat cultivars from Biotrigo Genética. The event brought together more than 300 researchers, academics and all links in the wheat chain with the aim of generating, debating and updating new technologies, aiming to increase productivity and quality in crops. In an unprecedented way, the meeting took place online between the 27th and 29th of July. The promotion of the event was joint between Biotrigo and Fundação ABC de Ponta Grossa/PR, with support from Embrapa Trigo.

Biotrigo, a wheat genetic improvement company, presented three cultivars and all were approved by the scientific body of the Subcommittee on Improvement, Industrial Aptitude and Seeds and validated by representatives of companies and entities accredited by the Brazilian Wheat and Triticale Research Commission. Recommendations for cultivation and management of approved cultivars will be published in the book "Technical indications for wheat and triticale - harvest 2022. According to Biotrigo's genetic improvement manager, Ernandes Manfroi, the expansion and high investment in Biotrigo's breeding program have allowed select and accelerate the launch of new products with better agronomic characteristics, high yield and industrial quality. "Our launches this year have evolved a lot in terms of yield." In total, the company has already developed more than 30 wheat cultivars for planting in Brazil." Our strains, before being launched, are evaluated in more than 50 locations in Brazil where our testing network is located. They also undergo disease resistance testing in controlled, industrial-quality environments, in the experimental bakery," he explains.

The first cultivar presented by the breeder at the meeting increased yield and safety in the classification of wheat for baking. TBIO Trunfo is a medium-sized, early cycle cultivar whose main objective is to combine productivity and safety to meet the market demand for wheat for baking with high safety in the field, especially for regions at risk of FHB. According to Ernandes, it has high resistance to difficult-to-control diseases, such as Fingernail Worm and Ear Blast. "We can say that it is a cultivar that brings a lot of security to the farmer by combining these two security points, in addition to being very productive. It has the best level of genetic resistance to FHB with the lowest levels of DON in the grain among wheat grown in Brazil ", he highlights. Furthermore, the cultivar also has an intermediate level of resistance to foliar diseases and an excellent pH, which guarantees greater safety when marketing by the producer. TBIO Trunfo is recommended for the regions RS I, RS II, SC I, SC II, PR I, PR II, PR III, SP II and MS III. One of the cultivars, TBIO Blanc, expands the wheat options for special projects. With strong and whitening flour, it meets important demand in the wheat chain that has been growing in recent years. According to Manfroi, whitening wheat has a high value on the market because it is used by the industry in a mixture with hard wheat to correct the color of domestic or bakery flour, producing products with a lighter color, in addition to, in the case of Blanc, delivering greater strength. of gluten. The launch stands out among whitening wheats due to its high yield. "TBIO Blanc is an upgrade of the TBIO Noble cultivar, a cultivar consolidated in this market since 2015 and which is also a whitener. An important advance in this second cultivar was to increase yield, in addition to improving management and safety in the field, with a higher level of resistance diseases, which TBIO Blanc brings to this whitening wheat market", he highlights. The mid-late cycle cultivar also brings greater resistance to blast, germination on the cob and PH stability. Cultivation is recommended for the regions RS I, RS II, PR I, PR II and PR III. It will be available for seed multiplication in 2022.

The third cultivar presented, TBIO Caliber, stands out among super-early cycle wheats due to its high grain yield potential, meeting the Brazilian demand for large-scale production with quality. Caliber is classified as bread/improver and its strong points are its high production ceiling, associated with a modern agronomic type and wide adaptation, being recommended from the south of the country to the Cerrado (irrigated). According to Ernandes, the cultivar has a good level of resistance to foliar diseases and excellent resistance to germination on the cob. "These are qualities that meet the demands of the producer, the requirements of the mills and the demands of the consumer market." The cultivar is expected to be zoned for sowing in all wheat-growing regions of the country in the year it reaches producers. TBIO Caliber begins seed multiplication in the 2022 harvest.
