PR 2024/25 Harvest: frosts and pests affect harvests in the state
Corn and beans face losses, while coffee, rice and cassava have positive productivity
The planting of the second corn crop for 2024/2025 was completed two weeks ahead of the 2023/2024 crop in Mato Grosso do Sul (MS). Executed by Aprosoja/MS, the Siga-MS project indicates that all regions of the state are between the vegetative and reproductive phenological stages.
In the northeast, north, west, central and southwest regions, conditions are predominantly good, ranging from 77,3% to 95,3%. Regular conditions in these regions range from 0,1% to 16,4%, while poor conditions reach up to 9,7%. On the other hand, the southeast, south-border and south regions have conditions below the potential of the other regions. In these areas, crops with up to 18,5% in poor conditions can be found. Regular conditions range from 19,1% to 26,8%, and good conditions are between 60,8% and 73,8%.
According to the association, for a crop to be classified as "bad", it must present several negative criteria, such as high pest infestation (weeds, pests and diseases) or flaws in the plant stand, excessive defoliation, leaf curling, early yellowing of plants, among other defects that cause significant losses in productivity.
A "regular" rating is given to crops that have few pest-related problems, reasonable plant stand and little yellowing of developing plants. A "good" rating is given to crops that do not have any of the above characteristics, with healthy plants that guarantee good productivity.
The estimate indicates that the second corn harvest will be 0,1% higher compared to the previous cycle, with a cultivated area of 2,1 million hectares.
The expected average productivity is 80,8 bags per hectare, in line with the production potential observed in the last five harvests in the state. Based on these figures, the expectation is a total production of 10,2 million tons, which represents a growth of 20,6% in relation to the previous cycle.
Aprosoja/MS agricultural engineer Flavio Faedo Aguena points out that the harvest is expected to begin at the end of May and continue until the last week of August. However, the peak of the harvest is expected to occur in July.
“In some municipalities in the southern region of the state, such as Nova Alvorada do Sul, Rio Brilhante and Bonito, it has already been possible to observe the beginning of the second corn harvest for 2024/2025. Our field team continues to monitor the development of the crop and monitor the evolution of the harvest throughout the state.”
Regarding economic data, the bag of soybeans is quoted, on average, in Mato Grosso do Sul, at R$ 115,02 and the bag of corn at 53,53.
The weather forecast indicates stable weather with sun and varying cloud cover. For the southern, southeastern and southwestern regions of the state, there is a probability of light to moderate rainfall. Occasionally, storms accompanied by lightning and gusts of wind may occur. The advance of a cold front extends across the state with the possibility of light to moderate rainfall and, locally, storms accompanied by lightning and gusts of wind. Significant rainfall accumulations are expected, above 40 mm in 24 hours. There will be a drop in temperatures, with values between 5 and 10°C, mainly in the southern half of the state.
