The 2024/25 second-crop corn harvest has been completed in Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso do Sul, according to information gathered by the Aprosoja/MS team. According to Flavio Faedo Aguena, the organization's technical advisor, good rainfall contributed to crop performance, despite frost and strong winds in some regions.

The advisor emphasizes that the start of the harvest was marked by caution, influenced by the adverse weather conditions experienced in previous cycles. The first few weeks after planting were critical, with irregular and insufficient rainfall, which, according to Aguena, compromised the initial development of the crops.

"However, in April, during the crop's peak water-demanding phenological stage, rainfall was regular and evenly distributed throughout the state. This recovery in precipitation allowed the corn's productive potential to be restored, resulting in a final yield above initial expectations. Therefore, the results of this harvest reward the resilience, perseverance, and hard work of Mato Grosso do Sul producers," he assesses.

Expected production of 14,2 million tons

After sampling 10% of the total area, the estimate for the second corn harvest in 2024/2025 was revised. Expected production is 14,2 million tons, a 39,4% increase over the initial estimate. Area remains expected to increase by 0,1% compared to the previous cycle, reaching 2,1 million hectares. Estimated productivity is 112,7 bags per hectare, indicating a 68,1% increase over the previous harvest.

Progress of the 2025/26 harvest

Aprosoja/MS is now monitoring the planting of the 2025/2026 soybean crop, which has reached 0,9% of the area in Mato Grosso do Sul. The southern region is most advanced with 1,3% planting, followed by the central region with 0,5%, while the northern region has not yet started planting. The planted area to date, according to estimates from the Siga-MS Project, is just over 43 hectares.

Regarding economic data, the bag of soybeans is priced, on average, in MS, at R$ 118,10 and the bag of corn at R$ 50,08.

Weather forecast

According to Aprosoja/MS, the forecast indicates stable weather across much of Mato Grosso do Sul, with predominantly sunny skies and varying cloud cover due to the action of a high atmospheric pressure system.
