Mosaic Fertilizers, one of the largest global producers of combined phosphates and potassium, advanced on its sustainability journey in 2021. Its efforts are listed in a report to the United Nations Global Compact, which includes the actions and investments carried out during the last year, in in line with the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN 2030 Agenda. “Environmental, social and governance themes are transversal to Mosaic Fertilizers’ strategy and corporate mission, and are considered a priority by our management. We have an ESG committee, which acts responsibly and safely in supervising the performance of dozens of projects in nine material sustainability themes, led by the company's president, Corrine Ricard”, explains Arthur Liacre, vice president of Corporate Affairs, Strategy and Sustainability of Mosaic Fertilizers.
Among the initiatives adopted and the main results obtained last year, in the four priority areas defined globally by Mosaic Company – People, Society, Environment and Business – the following stand out:
Aiming to create a diverse and inclusive environment, in which everyone can be free to express who they are, the company established a global task force, which promoted the creation of new diversity goals.
In Brazil, it promoted several actions to value communities and raise awareness among its professionals about the importance of cultivating a collaborative and innovative work environment. In 2021, 1.078 company leaders completed the Conscious Inclusion training.
It also implemented the “Elas na Indústria” project, in partnership with Senai, which provided training for women from the community of Uberaba (MG) to work in the operations area, with three of them being hired. Additionally, she launched her first Affirmative Internship program, focusing on people of color and women.
Aiming to concern the safety and well-being of its employees, the company implemented 410 projects last year to reduce or eliminate risk conditions for people in all its operations.
Believing in mutual growth promoted by partnerships capable of offering opportunities for economic and social development in the locations where it operates, in 2021 the company consolidated an agenda of social investment in communities through the Mosaic Institute. There were 31 initiatives in the areas of water, food, education and social development (the four pillars that guide the institution's actions), with eight social programs and 46 thousand people impacted.
It also benefited 91 thousand people through 227 actions of its internal volunteering program, to serve the communities, with the work of 800 permanent volunteers and more than 1.200 occasional volunteers. In one of them, Fighting Hunger in the Americas, held in September, 101 tons of food were collected and the Mosaic Institute doubled the amount by purchasing food from local stores.
With the aim of minimizing the impact of operations on the environment, seeking to help the world produce the food it needs, in balance with the preservation of the ecosystems that surround us, Mosaic Fertilizers worked through several programs to provide technical support to producers rural areas in adopting practices that can reduce GHG emissions, in addition to promoting water and biodiversity conservation.
As an example, Embrapa's Bifequali Technology Transfer can be cited, which contributes to the reduction of degraded pastures and intensification of livestock farming; Integra-Zebu: developed in partnership with ABCZ, which guides small and medium-sized producers in improving income and adopting livestock intensification practices, including Integration-Crop-Livestock-Forest (ILPF); and Pró-Carbono, carried out in partnership with Bayer, to guide sustainable agricultural practices and assist farmers in future carbon credit negotiations, which in 2021 had 129 participants, who replicated the knowledge and impacted 220 thousand people.
The company continued its rural extension work based on instruction and technical assistance for the best management and application of nutrients in the field, based on the 4C's premise - correct source, correct dose, correct place, correct time.
In production processes, Mosaic Fertilizers also intensified its actions with the aim of reducing GHG emissions and reducing water use. In the GHG area, in addition to reinforcing projects aimed at meeting the 2025 emissions reduction targets (20% per tons of product according to the base year of 2018), the company established a target of net zero emissions by 2040 for Scopes 1 and 2. As part of the actions to reduce emissions, there are electrification projects and reduction in the use of fossil fuels
Water use management is also central to Mosaic Fertilizers. This past year, the company reinforced the Zero Leak Program, strengthening process safety with a focus on three areas: mechanical integrity, risk management, commitment and preventive and corrective actions. Between 2020 and 2021, a 50% reduction was recorded in the frequency rate of more severe environmental accidents.
It also maintained another 11 projects with the scope of reducing the consumption of new water in progress, with emphasis on the Water Notice, a program that aims to support organizations to implement creative solutions to water-related issues.
To strengthen its governance structure, Mosaic Fertilizers adopted the MRE 2021 programs in 60, which promotes operational efficiency, process autonomy, decision-making and reduction of production costs; and Sustainability in the Value Chain, together with the Ethos Institute, to train suppliers in adopting sustainable practices in their business strategy.
It also intensified the implementation of the tool for screening suppliers and customers, aiming to improve governance in relation to compliance with laws, including labor and environmental laws of business partners.
For more than ten years, its actions have been reported through internationally recognized global reports, such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP Worldwide).
