The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) published Ordinance 1.119 in the Official Gazette of the Union (Dou), which establishes the National Program for the Prevention and Control of current quarantine pests. Amaranthus palmeri.

The pest known as pigweed palmeri or giant pigweed is one of the most difficult weeds to control, due to its biological characteristics and the current resistance to herbicides with different mechanisms of action, in addition to having a high capacity for adaptation in different environments.

Currently, the pest is officially present in two units of the Federation, eight municipalities in the state of Mato Grosso and two municipalities in Mato Grosso do Sul, restricted to some properties.

The published standard establishes criteria for the interstate transit of machines and implements used on properties where the pest occurs, as well as limiting the exit of waste material. A. palmeri of these areas.

The ordinance also determines that plants present in cultivation plots must be eliminated before flowering, prohibits the presence of seeds of A. palmeri in seed lots of any species, in addition to determining criteria for the authorization of scientific research or agronomic effectiveness studies.

The Program consists of carrying out annual phytosanitary detection surveys in areas without the occurrence of the pest and delimitation surveys when an outbreak is detected.
