One of the highlights every year of the Official Opening of the Rice and Grains Harvest in Lowlands is the meeting of the Rice Sector Chamber, of the Ministry of Agriculture. Once again the meeting leaves Brasília (DF) to be held during the event, opening the program on February 14th at the Terras Baixas Experimental Station, from Embrapa Clima Temperado, in Capão do Leão (RS), during this 33rd edition.
The president of the Rice Sector Chamber, Daire Coutinho, explains that among the meeting's agenda will be the definition of a diagnosis that will be made by Embrapa and Cepea on the rice production chain, from planting to the supermarket shelf. “This will diagnose all moments of rice production and Cepea and Embrapa will work on diagnosing these moments. This was a lot of work by the Chamber to obtain these resources for the study and we imagine that this work will begin from March onwards. And at the meeting it will be defined where to start and what interests the sector has, which this study should identify”, he highlights.
Another point that should be debated, according to Coutinho, is the reduction in the area of rice cultivation throughout Brazil. “For practically 18 years, the country has been reducing its rice area and now in the last three years there has been a more pronounced reduction in the area in Rio Grande do Sul. This discussion is important to support this new market situation and we will also have a debate in in relation to production costs in rice farming, which have been increasing in recent years and make the practice of historical prices unfeasible. The sector needs to seek higher prices to pay this higher cost”, he highlights.
According to the president of the Rice Sector Chamber, this discussion of the rice producer also being multi-crop has already been debated within the Chamber, and this involves a new scenario that involves the reduction of area and a better possibility of commercialization for the producer. “We hope that in 2023 we will have a better market than in 2022, mainly due to the reduction in carryover stocks and the producer’s need to cover this higher cost”, he highlights.
With the theme “Rice growers as multi-harvest producers”, the 33rd Official Opening of the Rice and Grain Harvest in Terras Baixas will take place from February 14th to 16th at the Terras Baixas Station of Embrapa Clima Temperado, in Capão do Leão (RS). The event will feature more than 130 exhibitors, 34 of which will be in the technological showcases, and more than 30 producer caravans are also expected. The program will also include panels that will address topics related to the market, management, technologies and crop rotation, and the holding of the Rice Sector Chamber meeting.
The complete program as well as registration for the event, which will take place in a hybrid format (virtual and online), and free of charge, can be found on the website harvestoarroz.com.br.
