A study of the Professional Master's Degree in Citrus Disease and Pest Control (MasterCitrus), from Fundecitrus, resulted in the regulation of three alternative bactericides for decontamination, in packinghouse, of citrus fruits intended for consumption in natura produced in orchards under a risk mitigation system for citrus canker. The authorized bactericides are based on peracetic acid, calcium oxychloride and chlorine dioxide.

Until then, the legislation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) only allowed the use of sodium hypochlorite. Based on the research results, the new determination also authorizes the reduction of exposure time to bactericides from 2 to 1 minute.

“In addition to presenting important technical advantages in relation to sodium hypochlorite, these alternative bactericides will contribute to expanding the options available to table fruit producers, allowing the use of the one with the best cost-benefit ratio”, assesses Fundecitrus researcher Franklin Behlau, work advisor.

The regulation of bactericides was requested by the Citrus Production Chain Sector Chamber with Mapa and the request was confirmed on March 31st.
