The forecast from the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) for the month of March indicates a tendency for below-average rain in a large part of the North, Northeast, Central-West and South Regions (indicated in yellow and orange on the map in figure 1a), with more punctual in the Southeast Region (indicated in blue on the map in figure 1a). In areas of Amazonas, Acre, Pará, Amapá, Bahia, Goiás, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná and Santa Catarina, the forecast indicates total rainfall within or slightly above average (indicated in light blue on the map in figure 1a) .

Considering Inmet's climate forecast for March 2024 and its possible impact on the 2023/24 grain harvest for the different producing regions, it is worth highlighting that the Matopiba region (which encompasses areas of the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia) presented increase in soil moisture due to the return of more regular rain in the months of January and February/2024, benefiting the development of first-crop crops. For March/2024, the forecast of below-average rain in part of Matopiba could restrict the development of part of the first harvest crops, as well as reduce the pace of planting of second harvest corn. The same scenario is predicted for much of the Central-West Region.

In the South and Southeast regions, above-average volumes of rain (shades in blue) are predicted for the month of March/2024, which tend to keep water levels in the soil high, favoring the development of first-crop crops, in addition harvesting part of the crops. However, in Rio Grande do Sul and in the west of Paraná and Santa Catarina, there is the possibility of water restriction in crops, where the forecast indicates rain close to or slightly below average, which could affect the development of crops in phenological stages of greater need. water.

Temperature

Temperatures should be above average across practically the entire country (indicated in yellow and orange on the map in figure 1b), with values above 25ºC. However, in areas of Roraima, Pernambuco, Bahia, Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo, the average temperature can reach 29ºC.

In specific areas of Paraná, Santa Catarina, Minas Gerais, Piauí, Maranhão and Amazonas, temperatures close to the average are predicted (indicated in gray on the map in figure 1b).
