Act No. 23 of the Department of Plant Health and Agricultural Inputs of the Secretariat of Agricultural Defense, published this Wednesday (25/05), in the Official Gazette of the Union, brings the registration of 52 formulated agricultural pesticides, that is, products that will effectively be available for use by farmers. Of these, 20 are biological control, 13 of which are for use in organic agriculture.

Among the novelties of biological pesticides is the first registration of the controller Tetrastichus howardi. A wasp whose larvae are parasitoids of the sugarcane borer (Diatraea saccharalis) and the brown caterpillar (Thyrinteina arnobia), which has emerged as one of the main pests of eucalyptus today.

For organic agriculture, the document brings the first product registered based on Reference Specification No. 39. It is a mixture of Trichoderma harzianum with Trichoderma viride, recommended for controlling the fungus Rhizoctonia solani and the fungus Fusarium oxysporum.

Other products registered for use in organic agriculture are based on Trichoderma asperellumBacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki, an isolate of beauveria bassiana, an isolate of Metarhikum anisopliae (isolate IBCB 425) and a Spodoptera frugiperda Baculovirus (SfMNPV).

Regarding chemical products, for the first time a product formulated based on the active ingredient Ametoctradin will be offered to farmers, registered in a mixture with metiram. The mixture aims to avoid cases of resistance to fungicides, given the innovations that appear on the market. The product, which has been under analysis since 2010, is recommended for the control of Phytophthora infestans in potato crops; Peronospora destructor in onion crops; Pseudoperonospora cubensis in cucumber crops and Peronospora sparsa in rose crops.

To control the corn leafhopper (Dalbulus maidis), considered a priority for agriculture, the Act brings a mixture of Pseudomonas chlororaphis with Pseudomonas fluorescens (also recommended for whitefly and brown soybean bug) and two microbiological products with the mix of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Bacillus velezensis and Bacillus thuringiensis.

The other products use active ingredients previously registered in the country. The registration of generic pesticides is important to reduce market concentration and increase competition, which results in fairer trade and lower production costs for Brazilian agriculture.

Biological control products

With the registration of these 20 products, there are now 36 low toxicity products for pest control registered in 2022.

Low-impact products are important for agriculture not only for toxicological and environmental aspects, but also for benefiting crops with insufficient phytosanitary support, since these products are approved for target pests and can be recommended in any crop.

All registered products were analyzed and approved by the bodies responsible for health, environment and agriculture, according to scientific criteria and in line with the best international practices.
