They were published in the Official Gazette of the Union this Wednesday (4) ordinances 73 to 123, which approve the Agricultural Climate Risk Zoning (Zarc), crop year 2022/2023, for the cultivation of forage and grain sorghum.

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) is a botanical genus belonging to the Poaceae family, of African origin. Sorghums are classified agronomically into five groups: grain, sweet, forage, broom and biomass.

Although it is the same crop (Sorghum bicolor), production systems aimed at producing grains (grain sorghum) are different from systems aimed at producing forage (forage sorghum) intended for animal feed or energy generation, in that the main focus is biomass production.

Sorghum fits well into production systems that seek to apply sustainable agriculture practices, as it is more tolerant to water deficits than other cereals, such as corn. It is an excellent alternative for second-crop crops or for cultivation in regions that face problems with drought.

Why follow Zarc?

Farmers who follow Zarc's recommendations are less subject to climate risks and may benefit from the Agricultural Activity Guarantee Program (Proagro) and the Rural Insurance Premium Subsidy Program (PSR). Many financial agents only allow access to rural credit for crops in zoned areas and for planting cultivars indicated in zoning ordinances.

Right Planting App

Rural producers and other agribusiness agents can access Zarc's official information via tablets and smartphones in a more practical way, facilitating guidance on the federal government's agricultural policy programs. The Zarc Plantio Certo mobile application, developed by Embrapa Agricultura Digital (Campinas/SP), is available in application stores: iOS Android.

Zarc results can also be consulted and downloaded through the platform “Risk Indication Panel”.
