Researchers and authorities from the water resources and agricultural research sector from various entities will meet next Tuesday, April 03, in Goiânia, to discuss the problems faced by the productive sector, which directly affect rural producers and, indirectly, the entire society: water scarcity and insecurity in the production chain.

The date "Dialogue: Irrigation and Sustainability in Goiás” is promoted by the Association of Producers of Vale do Araguaia (Aprova Sustentável), and should bring together major authorities in the water resources sector such as the researcher and supervisor of the Embrapa Cerrados International Articulation Center, Lineu Rodrigues; the coordinator of Water Resources at the National Water Agency (ANA), Wagner Vilella; the professor at the Center for Sustainable Development at the University of Brasília (UnB), Demetrios Christofidis; and the Secretary of Environment and Water Resources of Goiás, Hwaskar Fagundes.

With the lecture “Impact of irrigated agriculture on water resources and the environment”, Lineu Neiva Rodrigues makes up the list of speakers for the event. Lineu has a PhD in Agricultural Engineering from the Federal University of Viçosa (1999) and a post-doctorate from the University of Nebraska-USA, Lincoln, in irrigation engineering and water management. He was a consultant for the Organization of American States (OAS) and a visiting researcher at the University of California-USA, Davis, in the department of land, air and water resources studies, where he developed work on modeling the hydrology of irrigated areas. He is currently a researcher in the area of water resources and irrigation and supervisor of the International Articulation Center at Embrapa Cerrados. He recently released the book Irrigated Agriculture – Challenges and Opportunities for Sustainable Development, edited by him and the general manager of Articulation and Communication at ANA, Antônio Félix Domingues.

For the president of Aprova Agricultura Sustentável, Celso Lopes, this is a moment for dialogue and important decisions between representatives of irrigating farmers, environmental and water resources bodies, representatives of city halls, the Public Ministry, the Legislative Assembly and Universities.

Scenario

Goiás farmers have experienced consecutive periods of water scarcity, water management problems and the criminalization of irrigated agriculture in Goiás, especially in the Araguaia River basin. Allied to this, we have a paradoxical scenario where around 80% of the central pivots installed in the State do not have environmental licensing for the irrigated area, despite 85% of these same pivots being granted, that is, capturing water based on technical studies and calculations. made by the State Secretariat for the Environment and Water Resources (Secima), bringing uncertainty to rural producers regarding the continuity of the activity and lack of knowledge of the environmental impacts and consequent necessary mitigating measures.

Aprova Agricultura Sustentável understands that the solution involves, initially, dialogue between irrigating farmers and environmental and water resources bodies, with a view to pointing out paths to be followed so that this important economic and social activity continues to develop in a sustainable way. fair and sustainable way in the State of Goiás. The meeting “Dialogue: Irrigation and Sustainability in Goiás” is the first step for the productive sector to begin this discussion and, consequently, solutions to this obstacle in Goiás are reached.
