Line of hybrid seeds offers ceboliculturists options for all producing regions

Aimed at the professional market, Topseed Premium offers producers high quality varieties of onions, adapted for the different regions of Brazil, all tested and approved by those who understand the culture, the rural producer.

The expert in Bulbs and Roots from Agristar do Brasil, Samuel Sant'Anna, explains it. “The planting of hybrid onion seeds brought gains in productivity, standardization, skin quality and post-harvest.”

A reference in the development of high-tech cultivars, with four experimental stations and a unit dedicated to research, Agristar do Brasil offers the market, through the Topseed Premium line, 13 varieties of onions, namely: Andrômeda, Aquarius, Buccaneer, Excalibur, Fernanda, Gamay, Lucinda, Optima, Perfecta, Rubi, Serena, Sirius and Soberana. The portfolio provides options for producers to choose the correct material for their needs, ensuring sowing in different growing seasons.

“Each material has specific characteristics that allow for better adaptation in a given region or sowing season. Each hybrid is positioned to better adapt to climatic conditions and achieve excellent levels of productivity, offering the market a product of excellent quality”, explains Sant'Anna.

New of the year

The launch of the year came to corroborate all the research and development work dedicated to the Topseed Premium line, the Rubi purple hybrid onion. Developed to serve all producing regions of the country, it carries high production potential, round-shaped bulbs and the main characteristic is resistance to pink root, one of the main diseases that affect the crop. “Its ability to adapt, however, depends on respecting its ideal cultivation window, which has a specific season in each region”, highlights Sant'Anna.

Highlights in the Northeast
Among the highlights of the Topseed Premium line are two important materials, both adapted for cultivation in the Northeast region, the Serena and Fernanda onions. Among their main characteristics are their high production potential, as they are materials that support greater density of plants. Both have stood out mainly in crops carried out in the second semester where temperatures and humidity are higher. The bulbs have a yellowish color and a round shape, pleasing producers, buyers and the consumer market.

He adds that the materials have differentiated themselves compared to those existing in this growing season in the region, as in addition to presenting the aforementioned characteristics, both have increasingly become the preference of producers, as they provide security to the farmers who cultivate them, because they know they will reap good results.

Sant'Anna also highlights the red Gamay onion that has attracted attention in the Northeast region of the country, recommended for sowing at times when temperatures are higher. “It is a very productive material and resistant to foliar diseases, the bulbs have an intense purple color both internally and externally”, he details.

Cultivation in the Cerrado

In the Brazilian Cerrado, a region that encompasses the states of Minas Gerais, Goiás and the Federal District, the topography, temperature and climate make the area one of the best for producing onions in Brazil. According to Sant'Anna, the most suitable would be the hybrid varieties Aquarius, Andromeda, Soberana, Sirius, Perfecta and Lucinda.

The Andromeda hybrid onion made it possible for producers in these regions to sow seeds in January, a time when weather conditions are generally unfavorable for the cultivation of this crop in the Cerrado. The material has been standing out, as it has shown high productivity associated with excellent quality, enabling the farmer to harvest at a time when the national market has a lower supply of the product.

Another important product that producers in these regions work with is the Soberana hybrid onion. “This is a material that has attracted the attention of producers due to its high productivity and high yield of box 3 bulbs. Recommended for sowing from March onwards in these producing regions”, explains Sant'Anna.

He also adds that the Sirius and Perfecta hybrids have gained the trust of the most demanding producers, as they have high productive potential associated with the “skin” quality as the bulbs have a dark yellow skin color when ripe, attracting the attention of buyers and consumers increasingly demanding in quality. The materials are recommended for sowing from April onwards.

“We also have the Lucinda hybrid onion for the region, a material whose characteristics, in addition to its high productive potential, are bulbs with a rounded shape, very firm, standing out for their excellent formation and coloring of the skin (pine nut), with great storage capacity. , being an option for producers to store when prices are not favorable to the crop. Sowing takes place in the second half of April and May in the Cerrado”, concludes Sant'Anna.
