It was in 1968 that the first edition of the Phytopathology Manual was released. However, with the emergence of new pathogens in the field, the search for information has become increasingly recurrent, a factor that has motivated the launch of new publications. Thus, from the 2nd edition onwards, the book began to be divided into two volumes, the first being aimed at the theoretical principles and concepts of phytopathology and the second, aimed at diseases of cultivated plants.
In consideration of the accumulation of knowledge and the need for new research in the area, the 15th edition of the Phytopathology Manual was launched this Thursday, September 5th, published by Ceres. This time, with updates regarding the diseases that affect the most important cultures in the country, the publication offers a CD, on which a thousand color images representing different pathologies are available. “The book addresses viral, bacterial and fungal diseases and presents the symptoms, causal agents and forms of control for each culture”, said professor Lilian Amorim, one of the editors.
Produced by professors from the Department of Phytopathology at ESALQ, the Manual had the collaboration of four editors. In addition to Lilian, professors Jorge Alberto Marques Rezende, Armando Bergamin Filho and Luis Eduardo Aranha Camargo were also part of the entire publishing process, including technical and graphic review and choice of authors. “This edition has approximately 150 authors who comment, in each chapter, on a different culture”, said Armando Bergamin.
Coincidentally, on the same day of the launch, Professor Jorge Alberto Marques Rezende, who carries out research on tomato viruses, financed by FAPESP, received at ESALQ the specialist on the subject, William M. Wintermantel, phytopathologist researcher at the Salinas experimental station (California). ) from the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture), who came to Brazil to visit the University and talk about different points of the research, aiming to improve the study.
