The rain, on the first day of Showtec 2020, January 22, did not keep the public away. After participating in the opening of the event, a delegation of authorities, producers and rural technicians went to the Embrapa stand to launch three cultivars: BRS 391, BRS 467 RR and BRS 544 RR.

José Renato Bouças Farias, General Manager of Embrapa Soja, in Londrina, presented the cultivars, free of payment of technological fees. RR (transgenics) have broad adaptability, high production and productivity stability. They are good for entering the system early; They are rustic materials, adapted to regions throughout Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná and São Paulo.

Farias also reinforced Embrapa's social role and stated that the Company will continue with the development of conventional cultivars. “It is a request from rural producers who always ask us if we continue to produce these materials”. The recently launched BRS 391 is a material that incorporates Block technology, it has greater tolerance to bed bugs, an important pest in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul. “Conventional can have a greater market gain, with a very high protein content, well above the national average. We hope that this will meet the demand of the market, rural producers and end consumers,” he said.

He invited everyone to discover the active germplasm bank at Embrapa Soja (Londrina, PR), a collection with more than 65 thousand types of the oilseed. “It is Embrapa’s responsibility to Brazil. In terms of soybean genetics, we have total independence from the world. It is the basis of several chains and is strategic for this”.

The governor of Mato Grosso do Sul, Reinaldo Azambuja, highlighted the importance of Embrapa's work, which “gives us options based on the research carried out, with the availability of varieties to the Brazilian productive sector. In relation to the conventional one, this double aptitude gives competitiveness to this niche market that still exists and is growing in Brazil”.

The General Chief of Embrapa Agropecuária Oeste (Dourados, MS), Guilherme Asmus, made reference to a document released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) with guidelines based on issues of ownership, inclusion and sustainable production. “Markets today demand that production be aligned with sustainability. It is in this sense that Embrapa has been working”, he said, citing as an example the soybean cultivars launched at Showtec. “These are materials that meet sustainability: economic, environmental and with a high impact on society”.

The president of the Meridional Foundation, Josef Pfann Filho, invited those present to learn about Embrapa's soybean cultivar technologies at the technological showcase at Showtec. “The basic seeds of the launched cultivars are already in the field and were offered to us and in this year's harvest the producer will already be able to have access”, guaranteed Pfan.

Luciano Mendes, president of Fundação MS, thanked Embrapa and Fundação Meridional for their trust in being at all editions of Showtec. “I say and launch the challenge: I don't know and we probably won't know any farm in Brazil that doesn't have at least one Embrapa technology implemented in its soy production system”.

Luís Alberto Novaes, president of the CNA Grain Commission, said that the partnership between Fundação MS and Embrapa “brings a very positive institutional environment to advance the development of research in Mato Grosso do Sul”. When mentioning the varieties launched, Novaes spoke about the importance of conventional materials. “We believe in these materials for the entire environment of longevity of technologies, alternation of active ingredients. This is very important, because there has been a deficiency in conventional materials, and Embrapa assumes this role by launching conventional soybean cultivars”.

Tecnofam 2020

The event “Technologies and Knowledge for Family Farming (Tecnofam)” was presented to the governor of MS by the Embrapa Agropecuária Oeste team. Tecnofam, which is held every two years, will have its fourth edition this year and will take place from April 7th to 9th. Several partnerships are made for the success of the event. The forecast is that in 2020 around 3500 people will participate.

Technologies at the Embrapa Stand

In addition to the soybean cultivars launched, other materials are also demonstrated, such as those with Shield technology (tolerant to Asian rust), as well as their positioning in the production system so that the technology can be well explored. There is also the “ILPF virtual reality” space. The public understands how the system works using augmented reality glasses and enters a maze and sees from the previous phase of integration implementation to the implemented system.

Researchers and analysts from Embrapa Agropecuária Oeste (Dourados, MS), Embrapa Soja (Londrina, PR), Embrapa Gado de Corte (Campo Grande, MS) and Embrapa Cerrados (Planaltina, DF) are at the stand available to meet the public and talk on forages for meat and milk production, biological control, biodiverse agroforestry systems, intercropping of corn with brachiaria, table cassava cultivars and for industry; animal health; frost forecast; pest and disease management; soil bioanalysis; management of ticks in cattle; and discussions about the central formation of family farmer cooperatives in Mato Grosso do Sul.
