Urea prices in Brazil rise to US$30 per ton
India boosts urea prices and Brazilian producers face higher costs ahead of the 2025/26 second crop
Judicial recovery in agribusiness increased by approximately 21,5% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the first three months of last year, according to data from Serasa Experian. During the period, combining data from the sector—rural producers operating as individuals and legal entities, and companies related to the supply chain—there were a total of 389 requests for the resource.
Marcelo Pimenta, head of agribusiness at Serasa Experian, believes the increase in judicial reorganization requests reflects a more challenging financial climate, influenced by fluctuations in commodity prices and a more selective credit offering. "Many producers face high costs, long payment terms, increased collateral requirements, and difficulties in rolling over debt, factors that put pressure on cash flow and reduce room for maneuver. However, it's crucial to consider that the absolute number of requests remains small compared to the approximately 1,4 million producers who have taken out rural credit in the country over the past two years," he explains.
Brazilian rural producers operating as individuals represented the largest group in the total number of requests, with 195 requests for judicial reorganization. Compared to the previous three months, this represents a 39,2% increase.
Another profile that stood out was that of producers without registered ownership, such as tenants or members of economic and family groups, totaling 72 applications in the period analyzed. According to Pimenta, this profile tends to operate with narrower margins, facing greater challenges in financial management and access to collateral in scenarios of greater climate and credit volatility.
Large-scale producers came in second place, with 53 requests, followed by small landowners, with 38 requests, and medium-sized producers, with 32.
Regarding rural producers operating as legal entities in the field, the document points to the registration of 113 requests for judicial reorganization. This represents a 2,7% increase compared to the previous quarter, but a 31% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
The analysis indicates that PJ producers filed requests for judicial recovery in some specific sectors, such as cattle farming and soybean cultivation, which concentrated the largest number of requests: 42 and 59, respectively.
An analysis of companies in the agribusiness sector showed that they also needed to seek recourse. There were 81 bankruptcy filings in the first quarter of 2025. This represents a 15,7% increase compared to the previous quarter and a 5,1% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
According to datatech, "Wholesale trade of primary agricultural products" had the largest number of orders, with 23. Next, "Primary Transformation Agroindustries", which registered 14 orders, and "Wholesale trade of processed agricultural products", which also made 14 requests.
