Brazilian agribusiness filed 565 bankruptcy protection requests in the second quarter of 2025, a 31,7% increase compared to the same period last year (429 requests). The data is part of Serasa Experian's Agricultural Bankruptcy Index.
Five states stood out for the concentration of requests for judicial recovery in agribusiness: Goiás (94), Mato Grosso (73), Rio Grande do Sul (66), Minas Gerais (63) and Paraná (63).
The main new development, according to the survey, was the fact that rural producers operating as legal entities accounted for the majority of applications—something unprecedented since late 2023, when applications from individual producers were on the rise. "We're still evaluating whether there's been a backlog or a change in the profile of applicants," explained Marcelo Pimenta, head of Agribusiness at Serasa Experian.
Between April and June, rural producers with CNPJ registered 243 requests for judicial recovery, practically double the same period in 2024 (121). Soybean cultivation accounted for the majority of requests (192), followed by cattle farming (26).
In the same quarter, individual producers filed 220 applications, slightly above the 214 registered a year earlier. Large landowners led the list (55), followed by medium-sized (43) and small (39) landowners. Tenants and family groups also had significant participation, with 83 applications.
Companies linked to the agricultural sector submitted 102 requests, the highest volume in recent years and above the 94 observed in the second quarter of 2024. The agricultural derivatives processing industry, such as soybean oil, sugar, ethanol, and dairy products, led the statistics, with 32 requests.
