Ipea promotes debate on agriculture and climate change

A Embrapa Soils (RJ) contributed to the discussions promoted this week by the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea), in Brasília, during a seminar on the responsibility of the agricultural sector in the face of the challenges of climate change. The Unit's deputy head of R&D, Vinícius de Melo Benites, showed how research on soil management with built fertility has contributed to mitigating the impacts of agriculture in the Cerrado, seeking a balance between productivity and sustainability in the sector. 

The executive director of Innovation and Technology, Cleber Oliveira Soares, also represented Embrapa at the event, explaining about productive integration and sustainable production in the panel that discussed public policies to promote sustainable agriculture, mitigating emissions and adapting to the adverse effects of climate change. climate. Researcher Renato de Aragão Ribeiro Rodrigues, Secretary of Intelligence and Strategic Relations at the Company, participated in the opening panel of the seminar, held on the 26th. 

Discussions between experts from various ministries, universities, institutes and research bodies sought to list the challenges and raise opportunities for the adoption of sustainable agricultural techniques in Brazil, given the climate risk scenarios, the institutional commitments assumed by the country and the desires for compatibility between growth in agricultural production, the use and occupation of rural areas and environmental protection. 

According to Ipea, the use of technological knowledge and the use of appropriate governance and financing instruments are important to promote the efficient use of resources, in order to expand agricultural productivity and production and, at the same time, meet the urgency in adopting measures to mitigate and adapt to the adverse effects of climate change.

“The objective is to try to better account for [greenhouse gas] emissions, taking into account the economy, production and consumption side”, summarizes Alexandre Ywata, director of Regional, Urban and Environmental Studies and Policies at Ipea.

Vinicius Benites highlighted that Embrapa has a framework of data and information on soils and sustainable production systems which, combined with the economic knowledge of Ipea and other institutions, can contribute decisively to partnership projects in this sense.

The Seminar was organized jointly by the Ipea Regional, Urban and Environmental Studies and Policies directorate and the International Center for Policies and Inclusive Growth (IPC-IG), with the support of Climate Network.

Experts from the Ministries of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply participated in the debate panels; of the Environment; Planning, Development and Management; from the farm; of Foreign Relations; and Science, Technology, Innovations and Communications; in addition to the Civil House, Sustainable Agriculture Forum, Inpe, Embrapa, IBGE, Ibama, Unicamp, USP, PUC-Rio, Abiove and Globiom.
