The Fertilizer Purchasing Power Index (IPCF) for December 2024 closed at 1.05, slightly above the previous month. At the beginning of this year, in the short planting window for the second corn crop, it is important for rural producers to plan ahead and make decisions about purchasing in advance. Those who are able to plan ahead and make their purchases in advance have historically had a more favorable purchasing time, in addition to avoiding logistical backlogs in fertilizer deliveries and receiving the input at the ideal time for application.
During the period, fertilizers showed an average price increase of around 2%, driven by a 4% increase in potassium chloride (KCl). The period also saw an average drop in commodities of around 6% compared to the previous month.
It was led by soybeans, with most of this decline being linked to the rise in the dollar, since the index is also weighted by the exchange rate. In December, the dollar rose by around 5% compared to the previous month. On the other hand, demand for corn in the domestic market, mainly for corn ethanol plants, continues to bring firmness to commodity prices in the domestic market.
The market remains attentive to the start of the soybean harvest in Brazil, the weather and the planting window for the second corn crop, with a balance of 20% of the fertilizer still to be negotiated for this harvest.
