The National Supply Company (Conab) will hold on Wednesday (28) and Thursday (29), in Brasília (DF), in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Seminar on Losses in Grain Storage and Transport. All places to participate in the event were filled even before the registration deadline, but those who missed out will be able to follow the debates on the Company's official YouTube channel.
Embrapa researcher Gilmar Henz, from the Secretariat of Intelligence and Strategic Relations, will give the lecture “Perspectives for the implementation of studies applied to the identification and methods of mitigating grain losses” on Wednesday (28) at 14 pm. The opening panel “Initiatives to reduce food losses and waste in Latin American countries” will be moderated by analyst Gustavo Porpino, from the Department of Innovation and Business. Researcher Martha Miranda, from Embrapa Trigo, will address losses in wheat storage in the panel "Study of losses in grain storage – history and preliminary results" on Wednesday (28) at 16pm. Researcher Irineu Lorini, from Embrapa Soja, will address "Qualitative losses in grain storage and mitigation methods" on Thursday (29) at 14:30 pm.
Among the confirmed presences, in addition to technicians and directors from Conab and partners, are the official representative of the Waste Programs of FAO Chile, Sara Granados, and the representative of the National Committee on Food Loss (Odepa) of Chile, Daniela Acuña. Speakers from ministries, public companies, universities, associations and other entities will also participate.
The purpose of the meeting is to seek solutions to reduce the loss of grain in the post-harvest period in order to align with the goal of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3, which is to reduce by half the amount of food waste per capita worldwide, at a level retailers as well as consumers. During the meeting, new methodologies for reducing losses will also be discussed.
