With the arrival of frosts, the Santa Catarina Agricultural Research and Rural Extension Corporation (Epagri) released guidelines to help family farmers protect their vegetables from the intense cold in the state. Recommendations include everything from irrigation practices to specific care for each crop type.

For vegetable gardens in general, using sprinkler irrigation during the coldest hours of the morning can prevent plant tissue from freezing. It's also recommended to avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization and, in small areas, use shade cloth to cover the beds.

For brassicas, such as broccoli and cauliflower, tying leaves over the flower buds protects the most sensitive parts. For root and leafy vegetables, mulch or light mulch is recommended, as well as avoiding harvesting immediately after frost.

Fruit-bearing vegetables, such as tomatoes and peppers, are the most susceptible. For these crops, using thermal blankets or plastic tunnels can minimize damage. In greenhouses, reinforcing the seal and controlling ventilation helps preserve heat.

Epagri also recommends that producers monitor weather forecasts and always seek out the municipality's rural extension agent for personalized guidance.
