New thematic chamber will discuss sustainable agrocarbon
There will be four groups: taxonomy, traceability and certifications, sustainable finance and participation in carbon markets; initiative will allow the construction of integrated policies
InnerPlant and Growmark, an agricultural cooperative serving nearly 400 customers across North America, announce the launch of a sentinel project with InnerSoy, a soybean product designed to optically signal when under fungal attack.
The program will see Growmark establish small plots of InnerSoy throughout the Midwest in 2024, with an expanded number of plots over the next three years. The plots will act as “sentinels” to provide early warnings of mold infestations and help refine InnerPlant’s initial go-to-market strategy.
“Growmark’s focus on providing farmers with the tools they need to feed the world efficiently and sustainably makes them an ideal partner for our field pilot,” explains Dan Garblik, senior vice president of operations and finance at Growmark. InnerPlant.
“Working with their experts will help us explore ways to add value to their farmer customers, as well as understand and optimize real-world operations.”
InnerPlant genetically modifies plants to emit optical signals when they are stressed due to lack of water or nutrients or under attack by pathogens such as fungi. The signals are detectable from as far away as space and show stress up to two weeks earlier than existing technologies, giving farmers the earliest possible warning to optimize action and protect their crops.
The program will establish a series of sentinel plots located near soybean production farms to provide precision reconnaissance and improved agronomic intelligence. As a trusted advisor to farmers, Growmark will use the improved data to augment existing tools such as spore chambers, remote sensing and manual exploration in the field to make better crop protection prescriptions and recommendations.
“Farmers face enormous risk from climate, geopolitical events and pathogens,” highlights Mark Orr, CEO of Growmark. “This pilot gives our farmer customers the first access to cutting-edge technology that directly explores plant physiology to provide them with the critical data they need to mitigate some of these risks and better protect their crops.”
