Inmet warns of frost and snow in the South this week

Until the end of this week, the three southern states of the country will be on alert due to the advance of a cold front and an intense cold air mass, according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).

Areas of instability are expected to cause significant rainfall, which will begin this Monday (26) in several parts of Rio Grande do Sul, with the possibility of hail.

With the advance of the cold front in the state of Rio Grande do Sul tomorrow (27), the Campanha Region and the northwest of the state may experience severe storms. The forecast is that, in the coming days, the rainfall volumes will be significant, from west to east, mainly in the central-southern area of ​​the state, also covering the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre on Thursday (29).

During next Wednesday (28), a cold air mass will enter the west of the three states, significantly lowering temperatures and promoting a cold wave with temperatures close to zero degrees. A stronger and wider frost is forecast for Friday (30), mainly in the mountains and in the north of Rio Grande do Sul, with greater intensity between Santa Catarina and Paraná.

The advance of this intense cold air mass across Brazil will also cause a sharp drop in temperature between Wednesday (28) and Friday (30) in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, southern Minas Gerais and Goiás, in Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Rondônia, Acre and southern Amazonas.

In Cuiabá (MT), the forecast indicates a 13°C drop in maximum temperatures between Tuesday (27) and Thursday (29), dropping from 34°C to 21°C during the hottest periods of the day.

This will be the first cold weather episode in 2025, when a cold air mass hits the North Region of Brazil.

The chance of snow in specific areas of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná is not ruled out. Between the end of Wednesday (28) and the early hours of Thursday (29), snow is forecast in the Serra Gaúcha and in the mountains of the southwest of the state; in the mountains of Santa Catarina; in the Northern Plateau of Santa Catarina, reaching the south of Paraná, where snow may be more likely.
