Paraná has two bean cultivars that stand out as the most multiplied and commercialized throughout the country: IPR Sabiá, from the Rio group, and IPR Urutau, from the black group. They are the result of years of work by researchers from the former Agronomic Institute of Paraná (Iapar), now called the Institute of Rural Development of Paraná – Iapar-Emater (IDR-Paraná).
“There is a great effort to increasingly improve performance in the field, producing plants with the correct architecture for mechanical harvesting and with tolerance to pests, diseases and climatic problems”, says the Secretary of State for Agriculture and Supply, Norberto Ortigara. “The fruit of this effort is that we have more than 40 bean cultivars available.”
Beans are an extremely important crop for Brazil, being one of the basic foods in the population's diet. Paraná has favorable climatic conditions and a well-developed agricultural structure, which allows for significant production of high-quality beans that deliver more kilos per hectare. According to Ortigara, the State also has the privilege of having partners who work very closely with research and multiply these seeds for farmers in Brazil.
According to indicators from the Seed and Seedling Production Control, of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 harvests, 22.759,6 hectares of seed production fields for bean cultivars from the group were implemented in Brazil. commercial carioca, and 8.089,5 ha of bean seed fields from the black commercial group.
The IPR Sabiá cultivar is in first place in the Rio commercial group, with 3.864,9 hectares of seed production area, which represents 16,98% of the total seed production of this group in Brazil.
In the black commercial group, the IPR Urutau cultivar leads with 4.351,8 ha, or 53,8% of the seed production area in Brazil, far ahead of the cultivar that occupies second place, which is at 1.301,2 hectares ( 16,09% of the area). IPR Urutau has been widely multiplied in Paraná and contributes to the supply of this type of beans throughout the country.
“Considering the cultivars IPR Urutau, IPR Tuiuiú and IPR Uirapuru, IDR-Paraná has a 66,36% share in the Brazilian market”, points out José Neto, researcher and grain coordinator at the Institute.
For the CEO of IDR-Paraná, Natalino Avance de Souza, the data highlighted by Mapa is a source of pride for the Institute and recognition of the historical research work in Paraná, in the former Iapar and in IDR-Paraná. “It shows the commitment of the state structure to family farming and small farmers”, he emphasizes.
The Director of Research at IDR-Paraná and bean breeder, Vania Moda Cirino, highlights that the quality of beans produced in the State is the result of joint work between farmers, research institutions and technical support bodies, which has always aimed to deliver a product of excellence for consumers.
“Bean cultivation is one of the institute’s priorities, because it has great economic and social relevance for the State. It is predominantly produced by small producers, constituting the main source of income for these family farmers,” he explains.
Increasingly strengthening agricultural research is one of the Government's strategies. “We are making an effort to reinvest in research and the use of science and technology resources”, adds Ortigara. According to him, the State is working on the final details for opening a public competition, with a forecast of 126 people for agricultural research and more than 200 vacancies for technical assistance and rural extension. The contracting will be possible due to savings made by IDR-Paraná,
This year, IDR-Paraná launched two new bean cultivars: IPR Águia and IPR Cardeal. IPR Águia, from the Rio commercial group, stands out for its high tolerance to grain browning, a characteristic desired by all links in the production chain and especially important for farmers, as it allows them to store production and decide on the best time for harvesting. sale.
IPR Cardeal, with red grains (Dark Red Kidney type), developed for the export segment, will be used for the canning and preserves industry. With a 78-day cycle, it can achieve productivity of 3 tons per hectare. It is resistant to rust and common mosaic; moderately resistant to anthracnose, angular leaf spot and Curtobacterium wilt; and susceptible to golden mosaic, common bacterial blight and powdery mildew.
