The quality and versatility of the cultivars presented caught the attention of visitors who attended, in the second half of October, the second edition of Coopavel's Wheat Field Day in the Southwest. Rural producers and technicians from municipalities in the region participated and had contact with the best of research to develop solutions that make wheat farming even more profitable and interesting. This was one of a series of events organized by the cooperative, in September and October, with wheat as the main attraction.

“The results from our field day are very good. We are happy with the participants’ interest in learning more about the possibilities that wheat offers”, says agronomist Rodrigo Junior Schneider, one of the members of the organizing committee for the event in the Southwest. The visiting areas were prepared in the Reta Grande region, in Pato Branco. Visitors had access to information on 18 cultivars, some new ones with high production potential.

A special visitation scheme was observed to ensure maximum safety for those present. “Farmers and technicians were divided into small groups to avoid crowds. And then they advanced, according to a specific schedule and always wearing a mask, along the stations distributed throughout the area”, according to Rodrigo.

The event included the participation, in addition to seeds, of input and pesticide companies. The partner companies on the field day were: Basf, OR Sementes, Embrapa, Seedcare, Biotrigo, Syngenta, FMC, UPL, Ihara, Corteva and Iapar. The cooperative organizing Field Day participated with Nutriagro, a foliar fertilizer industry, Fertilizandos Coopavel and Sementes Coopavel.

More wheat

At the beginning of September, the cooperative held the 2nd Rural Coopavel Winter Show, which featured the presentation of 38 cultivars recommended for the cold months of the year. Twenty of them were wheat, some with potential productivity of up to six thousand kilos per hectare, almost double the average of 3,4 in Argentina, one of the world's references in wheat farming.

Coopavel's confidence in the success of the crop is so great that, during the event in Cascavel, it launched a special program to encourage the planting of wheat in its area of coverage. Coopavel Mais Trigo intends, in six years, to double the reception of grain in its units, going from the current 3,5 million bags to seven million in 2026. In the 23 municipalities in the West and Southwest in which the cooperative operates, 130 thousand hectares to activity. The goal is to increase this to 250 thousand. The fallow area in Paraná, in winter, is 2,7 million hectares, which demonstrates how much triticulture can grow.

There are three central pillars of Coopavel Mais Trigo: zero-rate input financing, crop insurance and guaranteed minimum price of R$100 per bag in 2022. The wheat farmer's profit margin will be 60%. President Dilvo Grolli informs that there is nothing like this in Brazil.

“The actions that support this program prove the confidence that Coopavel, which works focused on the production of quality and sustainable food, places in this culture that has everything to, in eight to ten years, make Brazil a self-sufficient in grain production”, according to Dilvo.

high demand

With production close to four million tons in the current harvest, Paraná, with 52% of the total, is the largest wheat producer in the country. In Brazil, production is seven million tons, but it is still necessary to import six million tons to meet demand. “One in every two bread rolls is produced with imported flour, further proof of how promising the future of wheat is in the country”, highlights Dilvo Grolli.
