Rio Grande do Sul expands network of meteorological stations
By the end of 2023, the State's own network will have 100 agroclimatic data collection points
The Genomics Research Center for Climate Change – GCCRC, an initiative between Embrapa and the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), opens registrations for the fourth edition of the “From Gene to Trait” course, which returns to its in-person format. The course ranges from the main research tools in plant biotechnology, such as identification of genes and associated microorganisms, to topics such as regulatory frameworks and intellectual property.
Last year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the course took place between August and December, with weekly classes and in an online format. There were 450 applicants from nine countries, but only 250 participants were selected. Of these, 90 participants met the minimum requirements to receive the certificate.
Returning to the in-person format, the organizers hope that interaction between participants will be successful again, even if this represents a smaller reach in regional terms. “There are advantages and disadvantages in both formats, but we believe that interaction over coffee, in the hallway, has not yet been replaced by the online format”, explains the course and GCCRC coordinator, Paulo Arruda. The course will be condensed and takes place between 8am and 17pm, on the 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th of September 2022, in the Embrapa Agricultura Digital auditorium, in Campinas (SP). The use of a mask will be mandatory.
In addition to Unicamp and Embrapa, the course has the participation of professionals from VIB (Belgium), Microbiome Support (European Union), Centro de Citricultura Sylvio Moureira/IAC, Fundecitrus and biotechnology companies such as Bayer Crop Science, LP Sementes , the startups Symbiomics and InEdita and the consultancies i9Pi and SLC Consultoria. These experts will cover techniques such as: gene discovery using bioinformatics, genome-wide association, comparative genomics and transcriptomics, microbiome analysis, metagenomics, culture collections of microorganisms, synthetic inoculants, inoculation assays, genome editing and intellectual property.
The course is aimed at postgraduate students and professionals from companies operating in the field of agricultural biotechnology who are interested in updating their knowledge about genomics. Classes will be held in Portuguese and English.
"From gene to Trait" is free and will select 100 participants for this fourth in-person edition. Registration must be made by August 5th, at this link. All applicants will be notified by August 5th.
Participants who have 75% attendance will receive a certificate. Postgraduate students who wish to count the course as credit for their postgraduate program can enroll as a regular or special student in the subject in the catalog of the Postgraduate Program in Genetics and Molecular Biology at Unicamp (subject: "NG300 - From Gene to Phenotype: An Introduction to an Advanced Biotechnology Pipeline, 3 credits.

The GCCRC is an initiative between Embrapa and Unicamp – within the scope of the FAPESP Engineering Research Centers (CPEs) program – for the development of plants adapted to the stresses of global climate change. Its research platform involves bioinformatics tools, gene editing, transformation, microbiome, phenotyping, intellectual property and regulatory affairs.
