Opportunity for Level III Technical Training with a FAPESP Scholarship is available within the scope of Thematic Project “Measures to reduce primary infections in the integrated management of huanglongbing in the citrus belt of São Paulo: technical and economic feasibility” (FAPESP Process n. 2017/21460-0), under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Renato Beozzo Bassanezi.

The objective of the study is to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of measures available to citrus growers that can be integrated to reduce primary infections of citrus huanglongbing disease. Measures applied directly to control the primary source of inoculum will be evaluated outside the orchard. In the orchard edge strip, up to the first 200 m from the property boundary, the region with the highest concentration of the migrant psyllid carrying the bacteria from neighboring areas, measures will be evaluated to prevent the primary dispersion from reaching the interior of the orchard and prevent primary inoculation of the bacteria by the psyllid, preventing the vector from accessing the plant or feeding on the plant.

The candidate will carry out his activities with the research group of the Research and Development Department of the Citrus Defense Fund (Fundecitrus), Araraquara/SP, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Renato Beozzo Bassanezi.

The scholarship will last for 6 months, extendable for another 12 months, depending on the scholarship holder's performance, which will be evaluated at the end of the 6 months in accordance with FAPESP standards. The selected candidate will receive a Technical Training Grant III (TT-3) from FAPESP in the amount of R$ 1.228,40 per month.

Specific activities for the candidate

The scholarship holder will develop activities to conduct field, greenhouse and laboratory experiments in which various citrus management practices will be related to the control of huanglongbing and its vector. Activities include vector monitoring, reading of sticky traps, inspection of diseased plants, monitoring of plant sprouting dynamics, measurement of plant growth and fruit production, physical-chemical analyzes of fruits, among others, in addition to organizing databases.
