Five new wheat cultivars and one triticale cultivar launched

The wheat sector now has five new wheat cultivars and one triticale, presented at the end of the 12th Meeting of the Brazilian Wheat and Triticale Commission which took place from the 3rd to the 5th of July, in Passo Fundo/RS. The approved wheats were Type Bread: TBIO Ponteiro and TBIO Duque (from Biowheat); Improver type: BRS Atobá (Embrapa); and Bread/improver type: ORS Agile and ORS Citrino (OR Seeds). The triticale cultivar is BRS Surubim (Embrapa).

From the afternoon of Wednesday (04/07) and throughout Thursday (05/07), the more than 300 participants were gathered divided into six research subcommittees, where the work was presented and recommendations were made that will be gathered in the publication “Technical indications for wheat and triticale – 2019 harvest”. According to the president of the Organizing Committee of the 12th Meeting, Ricardo Lima de Castro, the publication will have technical information from sowing to harvest, with updated data on quantity of seeds, fertilization, pest and disease control, weed management, between others. The publication is expected to be available to the production sector by the end of this year.

In the opinion of the president of the Organizing Committee, the participation of specialists who are references on the national and international scene was one of the differences in this year's programming, pointing out perspectives in resolving global challenges such as the control of Fusarium head blight and blast, pre-harvest germination, in addition to market obstacles that affect the quality and liquidity of wheat in Brazil.

“On the topics of Fusarium head blight and blast, the internationally renowned speakers showed the most advanced development of genetic resistance techniques and how Brazilian researchers are participating in these important scientific advances. It was very valuable for research entities and universities to open up partnerships in the scientific community and expand results in wheat improvement”, he points out, adding the importance of these speakers coming and sharing new knowledge with everyone present.
