On 12/06, the field day "Wheat: Alternatives for the Cerrado” will be held in Nova Ponte, in the Triângulo Mineiro. Research results will be presented on this cereal, which has increasing production in Minas Gerais. The characteristics and the recommended management of the BRS 404 wheat cultivar for rainfed cultivation, management of the main crop disease in the Cerrado, blast, and information on wheat quality and commercialization.

Researchers Maurício Coelho, from the Agricultural Research Company of Minas Gerais (EPAMIG), and Vanoli Fronza, from Embrapa Trigo, will talk about the management and control of blast, a disease that attacks ears and is highly prevalent in warmer regions. . "High temperatures associated with high humidity are favorable factors for the development of the disease", explains researcher Maurício Coelho. An alternative, according to the researcher, is to work with the selection of drought-tolerant materials and plant them at the end of the rainy season, starting in the second half of March, when temperatures are already lower, a climatic factor that is unfavorable to the fungus. causing the disease. Another option, if planting has to occur earlier, is to work with cultivars that take longer to sprout, which are later. According to researcher Vanoli Fronza, for planting at the beginning of March, even using later cultivars for heading, preference should be given to those that are less susceptible to the disease. This is because, in conditions of severe attack, as is occurring in the 2017 harvest, chemical blast control may not be efficient, in addition to requiring a large number of applications, making it economically unfeasible, he adds.

According to Embrapa Trigo researcher, Joaquim Sobrinho, BRS 404 wheat is a cultivar recently recommended for rainfed cultivation in the cerrados and which has high yield potential, good industrial quality for baking and good tolerance to drought. It is important to highlight that all the research and development work on this cultivar was carried out in the cerrado region of Central Brazil, in partnership between Embrapa and EPAMIG, educational institutions, cooperatives and also farmers. Seeds of the BRS 404 cultivar are available to producers and can be purchased from our partners at www.embrapa.br/cultivares
The Field Day "Wheat: Alternatives for the Cerrado" is promoted by Embrapa Trigo and EPAMIG, and has the support of Emater/MG, Moinho Sete Irmãos, Unions of Rural Producers in the region and ATRIEMG (Association of Wheat Growers of the State of Minas General). Registration is free and can be done at the event location.

Triticulture in Minas

According to the State Secretariat for Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Seapa) and the National Supply Company (Conab), Minas Gerais harvested more than 200 thousand tons of wheat in an area of around 85.000 hectares. The Triângulo Mineiro, Alto Paranaíba and Sul are the main producing regions in the state this year, with a predicted productivity of around 2,5 thousand kilos per hectare for rainfed wheat.

In this scenario, research gained space to meet the State's demand for this cereal to benefit producers with the introduction of triticulture into the production system. According to EPAMIG researcher Maurício Coelho, “the goal is to produce in Minas, throughout the year, the wheat that the milling and food industries consume”. The initial perspective is that new wheat cultivars, more productive and more tolerant to drought and disease, will occupy areas of properties that are normally idle in winter, enabling producers to optimize the use of their productive infrastructure and obtain greater annual profitability.
