A field day on Integrated Peanut Production will be held this Wednesday (29), starting at 8 am, in the municipality of Salgado de São Félix, PB, in the Paraíba Valley, Itabaiana region. The objective is to train farmers in the region in good practices at all stages of peanut production, harvesting and post-harvest. The event will be promoted by Embrapa Algodão, the Paraibana Research, Rural Extension and Land Regularization Company (Empaer-PB) and the Salgado de São Félix Municipal Agriculture Council.
Integrated Peanut Production consists of complying with the recommendations of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Agricultural Supply (Mapa) in all stages of production, guaranteeing a quality product and food safety for the final consumer.
The program will cover topics such as the concepts of integrated production, management of peanut cultivation, pest management, food security and economic aspects of peanut cultivation.
According to Empaer, around 200 families grow peanuts in that region, with technical guidance from soil preparation to marketing. To guide producers in the cultivation of this oilseed, a Technological Reference Unit (URT) was installed at the end of last year through a partnership between the State Government, through Empaer, Mapa and Embrapa, with support from the National Council of CNPq and local producers.
In Vale do Paraíba, the area cultivated with peanuts in the last harvest was more than 500 hectares and a production of around 400 thousand kilos. The planting period takes place between the months of March and April and the harvest in July and August. After processing, which is carried out in small agribusinesses in Itabaiana, the peanuts are sold in Paraíba, Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte.
The largest peanut producers in the region are Itabaiana, Mogeiro, Juripiranga, Pedras de Fogo, Pilar, Salgado de São Félix, São José dos Ramos and São Miguel de Taipu.
