In 2024, 100 years of commercial soybean planting in Brazil will be celebrated, which began in Santa Rosa. In this atmosphere of celebration and with the presence of Governor Eduardo Leite and the Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Sustainable Production and Irrigation, Giovani Feltes, the 24th National Soy Fair (Fenasoja) was launched, in an event held today at Plaza São Rafael, in Porto Alegre.

This year, Fenasoja will take place between May 17th and 26th in Santa Rosa, which is known as the national birthplace of soy, according to Federal Law 14.349/2022. The fair is considered the largest multi-sector event in the country, promoting business, relationships, knowledge and innovation.

“The fair has the characteristic of exalting a culture that accounts for practically a third of our agricultural sector. In other words, soy is a fundamental lever for our economic development", said Leite. He also highlighted that there is a very high expectation for this year's soy harvest in Rio Grande do Sul, which will possibly be the largest harvest in history .

Arrival of grains in Brazil

The president of Fenasoja 2024, Dário Germano, recalled the beginning of soybean planting at the hands of the Lutheran pastor Lehembauer, a missionary who came from the United States and brought with him some grains with the purpose of improving the lives of his congregants who lived on Line 15 November, in the interior of Santa Rosa.

“In these 100 years, soybean production has changed the course of our country’s history and economy. Crops were spreading, new cities, new schools, new churches, new hospitals were emerging. There were advances in genetics, agricultural machinery, technology and innovation. In this centenary of soy in Brazil, the Brazilian people have experienced the greatest cycle of wealth and human, social and geographic development,” he said.

"Soy has been, for Rio Grande do Sul and Brazil, a source of great security from an agricultural point of view, but also economically and socially. A good part of what today people in the city, in the more urban areas, can enjoy benefits and investments has a lot to do with what men and women do in the field", highlights Secretary Feltes.

About Fenasoja

Fenasoja has been held since 1996 in Santa Rosa by volunteers and takes place at the Alfredo Leandro Carlson Municipal Exhibition Park. The fair is biennial and is co-promoted by the City of Santa Rosa, with the support of the city's City Council.

The mayor of Santa Rosa, Anderson Mantei, highlighted the joy of launching Fenasoja in the capital. “The region is the largest producer of harvesters in Brazil. We also have the largest pig herd in the State and we are the largest milk producer, with the largest dairy chain in Rio Grande do Sul. All of this based on soybeans, grains, which justifies this power”, he highlighted.
