Since 2018, the external greening management work, carried out by Fundecitrus in partnership with citrus growers, has covered more than 1,6 million hectares of the citrus belt. The teams propose replacing uncontrolled citrus and myrtle plants located around commercial orchards, in places such as backyards, sidewalks, condominiums and ranches, with other fruit and ornamental plants, which are not attractive to the insect that transmits the disease. More than 66 thousand seedlings have already been donated to the population.

Fundecitrus agronomist Guilherme Rodriguez says that the population's support is decisive. “Nine out of ten people accept the exchange of their plants, which are sources of breeding and contamination for the insect that transmits greening, for other fruit and ornamental plants. They understand the social and economic importance of citrus farming, a source of jobs and income for so many families and cities,” he comments. “In addition, with the donation of seedlings, external actions are also contributing to increasing and revitalizing the afforestation of many municipalities”, adds Rodriguez.

Sustainable attitude

In Gavião Peixoto, in the interior of São Paulo, external management actions resulted in the revitalization of the city's afforestation. Twice as many citrus and myrtle plants found in the municipality were donated.

In addition to cities, institutions, such as the Association of Parents and Friends of the Exceptional (APAE) of Taquarituba (SP), also supported the cause, recognizing the risk that citrus plants without recommended management pose to commercial orchards and replaced their diseased plants with others were fruitful, demonstrating the strength of the #unitedagainstgreening campaign.
