In 2018, Fundecitrus launched the program to combat greening #unidoscontraogreening, focusing on external management of the disease – carried out outside the properties –, mainly in the areas of the citrus park in São Paulo and Triângulo/Southwest Mineiro with the highest incidences.

From August 2018 to December 2019, work teams made up of citrus growers and Fundecitrus covered more than 1,2 million hectares (55,8% of the programmed area). 619,9 citrus and myrtle plants were replaced with other fruit and ornamental plants, an efficiency of 93%.

Replacing uncontrolled citrus and myrtle plants is necessary because they are attractive to the psyllid (insect that transmits greening) – the insect uses these plants to feed and reproduce and can then migrate to commercial orchards, making disease control difficult. , which has no cure and is the most destructive in the citrus industry.

Positive results from external actions

Analyzes carried out by Fundecitrus showed that, associated with strict internal control of greening, external actions promote a drastic reduction in the number of psyllids captured inside farms and prevent the occurrence of population peaks on properties even if the insect population increases considerably in the region.
