Exports total US$ 255,4 billion until September

In September, the balance was US$ 5,3 billion; the trade flow for the year reached US$ 452 billion

The trade balance for September registered a positive balance of US$ 5,363 billion, resulting from exports worth US$ 28,789 billion and imports totaling US$ 23,426 billion. The trade flow was US$ 52,215 billion. The figures were presented today by the Foreign Trade Secretariat of the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (Secex/MDIC). 

In the year to date (January to September), exports totaled US$ 255,456 billion — an increase of 0,8% compared to the same period last year; and imports, US$ 196,338 billion, representing an increase of 8%. The balance is positive, totaling US$ 59,119 billion, and the trade flow grew 3,8%, to US$ 451,794 billion.

In the comparison between September and the same month last year, exports grew by 0,3%. In relation to imports, growth was 19,9%. The trade flow grew by 8,2% in the period.

Exports by Sector and Products

In September/2024, compared to the same month of the previous year, the performance of the sectors was as follows: a drop of US$ 0,79 billion (-12,1%) in Agriculture; a drop of US$ 1,53 billion (-19,8%) in Extractive Industry and a growth of US$ 2,4 billion (16,8%) in Manufacturing Industry products.

In the current year, compared to the same period of the previous year, the performance of the sectors was as follows: a drop of US$ 5,35 billion (-8,4%) in Agriculture; growth of US$ 5,95 billion (10,6%) in Extractive Industry and growth of US$ 1,94 billion (1,5%) in Manufacturing Industry products.

Imports by Sector and Products

In September/2024, compared to the same month of the previous year, the performance of the sectors was as follows: growth of US$ 0,07 billion (18,9%) in Agriculture; growth of US$ 0,49 billion (45,9%) in Extractive Industry and growth of US$ 3,32 billion (18,5%) in Manufacturing Industry products.

In the accumulated total for the current year, compared to the same period of the previous year, compared to the same month of the previous year, the performance of the sectors was as follows: growth of US$ 0,87 billion (25,6%) in Agriculture; growth of US$ 0,42 billion (3,4%) in Extractive Industry and growth of US$ 13,4 billion (8,1%) in Manufacturing Industry products.

Estimate for 2024

The fourth and final MDIC forecast for the 2024 trade balance results points to exports of US$335,7 billion, which represents a small reduction of 1,2% compared to the previous year. Projected imports are US$264,3 billion, 10,2% higher than the 2023 result. As a result, the expected trade balance is US$70 billion, the second highest result in the historical series, 28,9% lower than the record balance of US$98,9 billion in 2023.
