Exports of differentiated coffees produced in Brazil, which include those that have superior quality or some type of certificate of sustainable practices, totaled the equivalent of 1,78 million 60kg bags with an average price of US$190,58 and generated US$ 339,39 million in foreign exchange revenue in the first four months of 2018. Such coffees were exported with an additional average price of 28,8% in relation to Natural/Medium coffees, which is equivalent to US$42,57 per bag. The foreign exchange revenue from differentiated coffees corresponded to 21,3% of the total revenue from Brazilian Coffee exports, which was US$1,596 billion.
The six main importers of differentiated coffees from Brazil, in the same period, were: USA, in first place, with 426,06 thousand bags, responsible for 23,9% of Brazilian exports of these coffees; Germany, in second place, with 249,61 thousand bags, which corresponded to 14% of these exports; Belgium, in third, 226,49 thousand bags (12,7%); Japan, fourth place, with 160,92 thousand bags (9%); Italy, fifth place, with 116 thousand bags (6,5%); and the United Kingdom, in sixth place, with 102,62 thousand bags (5,8%). The other countries imported approximately 500 thousand bags of differentiated coffees, being responsible for 28% of our country's exports of this product.
Regarding the evolution of exports of differentiated coffees, it is worth highlighting that in the first four months of the last five years the volumes exported were: 2,57 million bags in 2014; 3,04 million bags in 2015; 2,32 million in 2016; 1,41 million in 2017; and, as mentioned previously, 1,78 million bags in 2018, which represented an increase of 26,3% compared to the previous year. These data and analyses, among many others on the international coffee market of interest to the sector, are included in the Monthly report April 2018 of the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council – Cecafe, which is available in full on Coffee Observatory of the Café Research Consortium, coordinated by Embrapa Café.
Specifically in relation to the month of April, Cecafé shows that the “Share % by quality in Brazilian coffee exports” had the following performance: 86,1% of Arabica coffee, 11,5% of soluble coffee and 2,4% of Robusta coffee. In this sense, it should be noted that this month 6.417 bags of Special or Gourmet Arabica coffee were exported, with an average price of US$ 222,39, and 6.400 bags of Special or Gourmet conilon coffee, with an average price of US$ 155,73, which were higher than the average price of each species by 45% and 42%, respectively.
In this context of exports and domestic consumption of Brazilian Coffees, in the month now under analysis, the Report emphasizes that “To clearly contextualize the magnitude of Brazil's capacity, even in the off-season, adding up all coffee segments, both exported and consumed domestically, we reached almost 4 million bags moved, which would correspond to around 20 billion cups of coffee consumed globally in just one month. These numbers reflect the great responsibility towards the consumer and the importance of Brazil in supplying the world market”.
Cecafe – As a representative of the private sector, Cecafé, together with the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil – CNA, National Coffee Council – CNC, Brazilian Association of the Coffee Industry – ABIC, Brazilian Association of the Soluble Coffee Industry – ABICS, does part of the Coffee Policy Deliberative Council – CDPC, from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply – Mapa.
