With El Niño now on the wane, many had hoped for a period of climate neutrality, but NOAA warns there won't be much time to rest
The 47th Expointer is maintained and will take place on the scheduled date, from August 24th to September 1st, at the Assis Brasil State Exhibition Park, in Esteio. The official announcement was made today by Governor Eduardo Leite, during a visit to the park, which was hit by floods in May.
The decision to hold the event and maintain the scheduled date was a consensus after technical analyzes on the feasibility of reestablishing the park and the conditions for carrying out the event, as explained by the governor.
“Holding a fair like this under normal conditions is already a challenge. In an extraordinary situation, even more so. Therefore, this was a decision made consciously and responsibly with everyone involved”, guaranteed Leite. “Expointer is a source of pride for the State. It will be important in this moment of overcoming and reconstruction, not only for the great economic movement it provides, but for the injection of spirit and celebration of the strength and work capacity of the people of Rio Grande do Sul”, he added.
In the coming weeks, the necessary interventions will be carried out in the park, which was heavily affected by the floods. The State government will invest around R$6 million in works at the site. Repairs will be made to pavilion floors, paving of roads, renovation of roofs and gutters and review and improvements of the hydraulic and electrical network, in addition to cleaning and sanitizing of common areas.
“The park had practically the entire area flooded and suffered a series of damages, but these will not compromise the fair. We are committed to all emergency repairs that are necessary to open the gates on the scheduled date”, stated the undersecretary of Parque Assis Brasil, Elizabeth Cirne Lima. “Holding this edition will represent the strength for reconstruction and we will be able to have a fair equal to or greater than the previous ones, due to the positive energy that is being channeled here”.
Considered the largest open-air agricultural fair in Latin America, last year the event brought together 822 thousand visitors and sales of almost R$8 billion – record numbers among all editions.
For the interim secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Sustainable Production and Irrigation, Márcio Madalena, the economic recovery of Rio Grande do Sul after the floods also involves holding Expointer. “This is confirmed by the manifestation of entities representing the primary sector in Rio Grande do Sul for holding the event. Furthermore, the fair generates around 30 thousand direct and indirect jobs during the pre-assembly, staging and disassembly period, which are extremely important in the State's recovery process”, he highlighted.
The Family Farming Pavilion, one of the most beloved by visitors, is a moment eagerly awaited by small producers, who usually see Expointer as the highlight of their sales of the year. Holding the fair will be important to support the economic recovery of this and other sectors, as emphasized by the Secretary of Rural Development, Ronaldo Santini.
"We need to foster the spirit of growth, strength and resilience, and this Expointer will be essential for this. Holding the fair will be fundamental for the recovery of the economy in several sectors in addition to agribusiness and family farming. We will make every effort possible so that be a great event”, he concluded.
