Wheat forum highlighted the economic viability of the crop
The event brought together around 300 researchers, agribusiness professionals, farmers, seed producers, cereal growers and mills from 10 Brazilian states
Authored by Senator Acir Gurgacz (PDT-RO), coordinator of the FPA Labor Committee, the proposal grants exemption from the Tax on Industrialized Products (IPI) on the acquisition of new machines, equipment, devices and instruments intended exclusively for use in national agriculture, when purchased by family farmers or agricultural cooperatives. The project still needs to go through the Economic Affairs Committee (CAE) for final deliberation.
For Senator Acir Gurgacz, coordinator of the FPA Labor Committee, the project aims to improve and modernize the field, reducing costs. “The granting of the benefit to family farming and agricultural cooperatives arises from the need to serve two of the main sectors of our agriculture, which are strategic for promoting food and nutritional security in our territory.”
“We believe that mechanization with reduced costs and agricultural professionalization are levers for us to become the largest agricultural producers in the world,” added the parliamentarian.
According to the Agricultural Census, family farming is the basis of the economy of 90% of Brazilian municipalities with up to 20 thousand inhabitants and represents 84% of rural establishments. Furthermore, it is responsible for the income of 40% of the country's economically active population and for more than 70% of Brazilians working in the countryside.
For Kátia Abreu, the proposal benefits this entire contingent of producers. “Even though it is one of the most competitive sectors in the world market, there are still challenges in achieving more dynamism in the production sector. One of them is the cost of modernization and investments in improvements, especially in the case of small farmers”, she explains.
