In some regions of Brazil, Fusarium race 3 is a common problem in tomato crops, mainly in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo and some parts of Minas Gerais. Little by little the disease has been advancing, gradually and today areas have also been identified in Ceará, Goiás, the South of Brazil and São Paulo.

Given this scenario, the specialist in Tomatoes and Peppers at Agristar do Brasil, Thiago Teodoro, explains that in these regions there are a large number of farmers who have already been growing tomatoes in the same area for years, which is why one of the main options to avoid these problems soil, would be the use of hybrids with resistance to Fusarium race 3.

“We have brought together in the Evimeria tomato a complete package of resistances, such as the main viruses, the geminivirus and the virus, genetic resistance to the Stemphylium fungus that causes great damage in times of high air humidity and protection against fungus Fusarium race 3. Furthermore, it stands out for its fruit size, color and higher shape, which provides more weight and will help the farmer's final yield, in addition to its firmness, which has stood out and brought safety for transportation” , details Teodoro. ;

Different regions, same planting difficulties

In Serra da Ibiapaba, a region in the state of Ceará that has a tradition of tomato cultivation and, therefore, serious problems with the disease Fusarium race 3, the technical sales consultant of Superseed/TSV, Lavoisier Neto, tells how the material has served the producers.

“The Evimeria tomato has adapted well to the needs of the region, this is the case of producers Rogério Severo and Clayton Nazareno, who three years ago were unable to produce tomatoes due to plant losses due to Fusarium race 3. With Evimeria he produced in cultivation protected, 10 thousand plants, 300 boxes per thousand plants and each box weighing an average of 29 to 30 kg”, says Neto.

Clayton says that the material is very good, with excellent weight and a lot of production. “Evimeria adapted well to our region, we even tried to plant others before, but none of them responded, the plants died and we lost everything. Evimeria came to gain its space here, as it has very advanced technology. I’m satisfied with it and I’ll continue planting.”

More than 2 thousand kilometers away, in Imbé de Minas (MG), tomato producers face similar circumstances. This is the case of tomato grower Anderson Neves Gonçalves, who planted eight thousand Evimeria tomato plants in an area that requires care for diseases such as Virada, geminivirus and Fusarium, mainly.

Superseed technical sales consultant, José Paulo Júnior, explains that, in addition to resistance, characteristics such as fruit pattern, color, size and firmness, were what the producer was looking for and Evimeria suited it very well. “This was the first time he planted and he was satisfied, he is even going to do another sowing with Evimeria”.

“The tomato is very good, the flowering rate is 90% and produces an average of five to six fruits per bunch, with very large and very firm tomatoes. We really liked it and I’ve already ordered more to be sown”, comments producer Anderson.
