Rain increases reports of Asian soybean rust in the 22/23 harvest
There are 119 reports of the disease and rust is present in nine Brazilian states, with 79% of occurrences in commercial crops in the grain filling phase
Mato Grosso do Sul recorded below-average rainfall, but the volume was sufficient to allow plants to develop and the vegetation vigor index (NDVI) shows good evolution of soybeans. As a result, remote sensing data from EarthDaily Agro estimates that productivity should reach 3,8 tons per hectare, considered a record and 50% above the previous season, which suffered from losses due to drought.
“In the Central-West, some areas had a rainfall volume 50% above the average for the period. In general, soybeans are developing well and high yields are expected. Both the European (ECMWF) and American (GFS) models indicate above-average rainfall for the next 10 days, keeping soil moisture high, but potentially hampering field operations in areas that are already being harvested, such as Mato Grosso. and Goiás”, points out Felippe Reis, crop analyst at EarthDaily Agro.
In the South, Paraná also has the potential for high productivity. The NDVI records a level similar to the good year of 2021 and, at the moment, it is estimated that productivity is 3,58 tons per hectare, the third highest in the last 15 years. In the short term, soil moisture in the state is expected to increase due to the occurrence of rain. In Rio Grande do Sul, which is suffering the effects of La Niña, the NDVI is still well below and the productivity estimate, at the moment, is around 2 tons per hectare. Rain is expected in the coming days, but below average.
In the Southeast, soybean crops in the Triângulo Mineiro (MG) and the southern region of Minas Gerais are expected to have above-average rainfall in the next 10 days. In the northwest of the state, the volume will be below average, but crops are developing well due to rain throughout the cycle and the expectation of good productivity remains. In São Paulo, the rains are expected to continue in the coming days. The NDVI shows good evolution throughout the cycle, indicating good productivity for summer crops (first harvest corn and soybeans).
In MATOPIBA, a region that comprises Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia, the NDVI registered a drop in recent days, but remains above average, pointing to a good productive potential for soybeans in the region. Soil moisture should decrease over the next few days, without impacting plant development in the short term.
