ESALQ celebrated 115 years with tributes

The creations of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, foundations, associations, projects and services were remembered

With tributes to undergraduate and postgraduate courses, foundations, associations, projects and services, the “Luiz de Queiroz” School of Agriculture (USP/ESALQ) celebrated, on 3/6, its 115 years of foundation.

In a commemorative ceremony held in the Main Hall of the Central Building, the School director, professor Luiz Gustavo Nussio, and the vice-director, professor Durval Dourado Neto, received teachers, technical staff, students and members of the community to celebrate Luiz Vicente's legacy by Souza Queiroz. In his speech, Nussio recalled that the institution has a long and well-trodden trajectory, and also highlighted elements responsible for the School's success. “In its 115 years, ESALQ has collaborated in various aspects with society and this makes us very proud. But the entire contribution was only possible through a succession of successful actions over time, developed by teams of extremely high-quality teachers and technical staff, who committed themselves to training leading professionals.”

In addition to Nussio and Dourado, the central table included the director of the Center for Nuclear Energy in Agriculture (CENA), Tsai Siu Mui, the vice-mayor of the campus, Silvio Moure Cícero, councilor Gilmar Rotta, professors Gerson Barreto Mourão, coordinator of the Postgraduate Program (PPG) Animal Science and Pastures, Joaquim Bento de Souza Ferreira Filho, coordinator of the PPG Applied Economics, Rubens Ângulo, president of the Luiz de Queiroz Agricultural Studies Foundation (Fealq), Maria Elisa de Paula Eduardo Garavello, from PPG Applied Ecology, Fernando Dini Andreote, coordinator of PPG Agricultural Microbiology, Thais Vieira, coordinator of the Food Sciences course at ESALQ, João Gustavo Brasil Caruso, from the Association of Retired Teachers at ESALQ (Adae), and also journalist Alicia Nascimento Aguiar, head of the Communication Division (DvComun), all honored at the session.

The festive ceremony therefore recognized and honored CENA's 50th anniversary, and also the creation of PPGs in Animal and Pasture Science and Applied Economics; the 40 years since the creation of Fealq and the creation of the PPG in Agricultural Microbiology; the 30 years of the doctorate course in Phytotechnics; the 15 years of existence of the undergraduate course in Food Sciences, Adae, DvComun, the Equoterapia Project, and the creation of the Interunits PPG in Applied Ecology (ESALQ/CENA).

The 10th anniversary of the listing of the Central Building and part of the complex that makes up the USP Campus “Luiz de Queiroz” was also celebrated by the Council for the Defense of the Historical, Archaeological, Artistic and Tourist Heritage of the State of São Paulo (Condephaat).

The “Luiz de Queiroz” Vocal Group, and also the ESALQ Orchestra, are responsible for the cultural moments of the ceremony.

Since 1901, the year it was founded, ESALQ has trained more than 14.600 undergraduate professionals and awarded more than 9 masters and doctors. Today it has around 2 undergraduate students and 1.000 postgraduate students. Its human resources staff is made up of 246 teachers and 520 technicians and administrators.

Motion – In addition to the tribute paid by the School board, DvComun was also honored with the applause motion nº 134/2016, proposed by councilor Gilmar Rotta. Administratively linked to the School Board, DvComun is the official body responsible for publicity and institutional communication projects, operating in: press office, internal and corporate communication, TV USP Piracicaba, photographic and audiovisual services and support for institutional events.
