The Agricultural Research Company of Minas Gerais (EPAMIG) begins the commercialization of qualified coffee seeds in 2023. The materials are offered by the Experimental Fields of Três Pontas, Machado and São Sebastião do Paraíso (South of Minas) and Patrocínio (Alto Paranaíba) and meet the requirements of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa), such as minimum germination of 70%, absence of live insects and 98% purity.
EPAMIG agronomist and technical advisor Vanessa Figueiredo highlights that opting for qualified seeds is essential for the formation of healthy seedlings. "The investment in the formation of coffee crops is high, so the producer must pay special attention when purchasing seeds. A qualified seed will produce vigorous seedlings and, consequently, contribute to obtaining a crop with high productive potential ”.
Seeds are made available, especially during the harvest period, between the months of May and August. Vanessa Figueiredo explains that there are differences in the preparation of grains intended for seed production and those used for drinking. “The coffee beans intended for the production of quality seeds must be harvested at the “cherry” stage, peeled, degummed in clean water and washed until all mucilage is removed. After this procedure, it must be placed to dry in a clean and ventilated place.”
