The Agricultural Research Company of Minas Gerais (EPAMIG) will hold a Field Day on citrus farming on June 21st, starting at 9am. The event, in person and free, will take place at the São José site, in the municipality of Campanha (MG). To participate, it is not necessary to register in advance.

At the meeting there will be three field stations that will address the main demands of citrus growers in the South of Minas. The region is a citrus growing hub in the state and the municipality of Campanha stands out with an average production of 1,5 million tons of Ponkan tangerine in planted areas exceeding one thousand hectares.

The first station, taught by EPAMIG researcher, Ester Ferreira, will address the importance of diversification for citrus farming. Next, Embrapa researcher Eduardo Girardi will talk about the interaction between rootstock and scion. To conclude, Embrapa researcher Eduardo Stuchi will lead a discussion on Fly Dragon rootstocks in citrus farming.

Rootstocks in citrus farming

The choice of rootstock is extremely important for the success of citrus farming. The combination of scion and rootstock is responsible for a series of plant characteristics, such as resistance to pests, diseases and drought, adaptation to soils with different physical-chemical characteristics, plant size, fruit quality and productivity.

Furthermore, the quality of the seedlings is another important factor in obtaining healthy and productive orchards. A good quality seedling must be grafted onto rootstock whose seed was obtained from registered plants. The bud must come from disease-free mother plants, especially those transmissible through grafting. The use of screens is indicated for the protection of aphids, virus vectors, leafhoppers and the psyllid that causes Grenning, the most destructive disease and the greatest threat to citrus farming in the world.
