Epamig's Corn Showcase reaches its 15th edition

On April 29, Patos de Minas (MG) will host the 15th edition of the Corn Showcase, an event promoted by the Minas Gerais Agricultural Research Company (Epamig). The meeting will take place at the Sertãozinho Experimental Field, marking the resumption of activities that aim to promote alignment and updating of knowledge about silage among producers in the region. 

“We seek to bring new information, especially that collected through Epamig research. Participants will have the opportunity to hear about silage production, the correct cutting time, management, harvesting, among other important topics so that the right decisions can be made,” emphasizes Fernando Miziara, an agricultural engineer at the Sertãozinho Experimental Field.

Lectures and field stations

The event includes lectures given by experts in the silage chain, who will address topics such as “High-precision planting: technologies and adjustments for perfect planting”, “Management for high-productivity silage” and “Impacts of silage quality on profitability and dairy and beef cattle farming”.

Wagner Tompson, an agricultural engineer responsible for giving the lecture “Impacts of silage quality on profitability and dairy and beef cattle farming”, highlights the importance of the topic that seeks to meet the demands of producers in the region.

"We are observing, at the time of harvesting corn for silage on the properties, that this practice has been occurring while the plant is still very green, which causes losses in production potential, directly impacting dairy farming, the producer's main source of income", he explains.

"In addition, when harvesting is done early, the genetic potential of hybrids intended for silage and conversion into milk is not fully utilized. This compromises the performance of animals and generates negative financial impacts. For this reason, I will present guidelines on correct harvest management and improved hybrids as viable alternatives for producers", he adds.

After the lectures, participants will be directed to the field stations, where they will be presented with work conducted by companies, together with Epamig, at the Sertãozinho Experimental Field. The experiments evaluate different corn hybrids regarding their ability to produce quality silage.
