The entities representing tobacco producers, formed by the Association of Tobacco Growers of Brazil (Afubra) and the Federations of Agriculture (Farsul, Faesc and Faep) and Rural Workers (Fetag, Fetaesc and Fetaep) of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná, and leaders of tobacco companies, are meeting this week (January 26th and 27th) to begin negotiating the price of tobacco for the 2020/2021 harvest. The meetings will be held individually with each company, in person (in compliance with all health protocols), at Afubra's headquarters, in Santa Cruz do Sul/RS. The tobacco companies received will be: BAT (Souza Cruz), Philip Morris, JTI, Universal Leaf, Alliance One, China Brasil, CTA and Premium Tabacos.
The first meeting between the entities and tobacco companies, regarding the 2020/2021 harvest, was held on December 17, where production costs were compared. Due to divergences in calculating costs, new meetings were held on January 12th and 13th. In this week's meetings, in addition to price negotiation, the meeting agenda will address each company's production cost estimation policy; the schedule for releasing values to those integrated; and general subjects.
